Hi I have just bought a 1989 110 2.5 turbo diesel sw dt station wagon and after letting her sit for 6 weeks took it for a drive. It was running well prior to lay up but now smokes when first started and drives as if the gears are stiff. Could the brakes be binding after lay up or would it be a gearbox problem?
Can someone please help with diagnosis as I am a novice to these vehicles.
Hopingly.....!! Monx.

If your motor is 1989 i dont think its Defender they didnt start til 1990.2.5td is normal in Model 110.All my landys had a "notchy" gear change i think its the way they are.A small amount of smoke(white) on cold start or(black) under full load is normal for 2.5td.:welcome2:

Well, every Td engine I have ever seen has smoked like hell on start up - mostly blue, grey and black. So smoke is not an issue.

The gearbox will feel a bit stiff after leaving it for 6 weeks, it will most likely loosen up a bit with use. If it doesn't, you may need to change the GB oil.

Thanks guys for the replies. I have been looking at sites and think the diff lock may be engaged as the wheels squeel on cornering. I have not been driving the vehicle until the problem is solved.

Hi just to update I noticed that diesel is leaking out of the injector pump while the engine is running but stops when switched off. It seems to be pouring out from somewhere near the bottom of the injector pump housing. Is there a seal that might have worn or a fuel lift daiphram on the underside ?
Many thanks

;)Dps pump often gets leaks when worn, the one ive seen most is from the throttle spindle but the hot fuel can run anywhere.Try and clean the pump with aero cleaner or similar and pinpoint. The lift pump diaphragm is in the lift pump but ther is a boost diaphragm in the boost housing at the back of the pump.Does the fuel come out under pressure?

Hi thanks for your help Turboman.
The fuel pours out from somewher below the throttle spindle when the engine is running but when switched off it stops. Is the boost housing on the underside of the pump looking at it from above in the engine bay?
Thanks again

Sounds like a low pressure side leak then.It will stop when the lift pump stops running(when engine stops).Boost housing is behind the pump by engine block it has a little round cover and two banjo unions.Throttle spindle leak is easy u can DIY if confident or injection specialist can fix.Keep us posted:)
