Def 90 starter

Hi all. My 04 defender 90 has a starter issue. Just had a quick look and see the bottom 2 bolts seem to be 1/2 inch. What size is the top nut and would I be right in saying it looks a real ******* to get at. Thanks in advance

15mm, for the nut on top.

Disconnect the battery.
Disconnect the starter cables, makes access it easier to remove and refit.
The bottom ones are 13mm. Do these first

Using a 15mm 1/4 socket with an extension or two, make it so that the ratchet EDIT: bar is longer than the starter if possible.
Undo the nut while pulling the starter away from the bell housing, this way the socket does not get trapped.
Refit as they say is a reverse .

Wont be 1/2 inch, probably 12 or 13mm. If you use imperial on a metric bolt you may end up with a loose fit and round the bolt head and end up making your life a misery! If you can, use a 6 sided socket rather than the normal 12 point.

Thanks kwackerman. Starter out and in with auto tech. He says he's had several defenders in with top nut missing of starter. Wonder why lol

The solenoid rebuild kits are cheap, the contacts burn out.
