Okay so I'm thoroughly fed up I'm trying to rid myself of the dreaded death wobble.

At any speed over 50mph in my 300tdi auto hitting a bump sends the front wheels into a violent shaking only stops by hitting the brakes and getting down below 40mph.

Jacked front wheels up checked 12-6 and 9-3 positions by rocking only play was o/s wheel bearing swivel solid

Had both front wheels off checked and adjusted wheel bearings o/s was loose. O/s swivel preload fine with no play seal not leaking no play at all.

N/s wheel bearing fine. N/s swivel had resistance but not enough, took a shim out and reset preload. Spot on now.

Checked all track rod's including drag link.

Steering box tight to chassis, drag link tight.

The wheels and tyres came off another disco and where fine on that one for over a 1000 miles.

Checked steering damper looks like it is leaking and has smooth resistance in both directions but not changed one before but can't say it is correct as never changed one before.

I've gone through every thing I've seen on forum advice and it still does it.

Is there any other avenue to try it's doing my head in. Could steering damper be the fault. I once had a classic rr that didn't have one and didn't have this problem.

Will say everything was changed about 3 years ago poly bushed new shocks springs swivel balls (Teflon type) all new seals etc and one shot grease. Wasn't like this before and wasn't straight after either seems to have developed over last 6-12 months.

Is it lifted? Steering damper if leaking should be changed anyway. Not hard to do or expensive. Removing the damper completely gives symptoms you describe.

Panhard bushes
Hi mate, just a long shot, have you crossed over the tyres and back to front and checked the tyre pressures, I had a very similar problem, took it to kwik fit to get the tracking checked and while the wheels were off the fitter changed the tyres around and did the tyre pressures, problem solved, like I say just a long shot.

No its not lifted all standard height and standard springs and shocks.

Panhard bushes polybushed 3 years ago had a bar on them and all the bushes to check for play all snug as bugs.

I haven't swapped front for back tyres I have to say will give that a go costs nowt to have a go cheers.

Been looking at new steering dampers on evil bay terra firma looks about mid range don't want brit part and don't need some heavy duty off road jobby so should fit the bill will see what happens with that fitted.
