Dealer breaks window, your thoughts please

post your query up on consumer action group website and youll no doubt hear from a solicitor on his day off who will advise you as to what your legal rights and entitlements are and how best to resolve your issue.

personally, as someone has already said, if they broke it then they should fix it, regardless of how it broke, it was there responsibly when you contracted them to repair it for you and i dont think that you were paying them to break your glass.

consumer action group is seriously worth a shot.

UPDATE.

The local dealer is still humming and hawing as to accepting responsibility. So have taken the vehicle to me local body shop, Polish adventure which came recommended by two local garages, and they pulled out the rear tail gate for £20, yes TWENTY POUNDS! and apart from a small crease behind the spare tyre both skins are looking perfect. They have also offered to fit the glass, which deangermouse has very kindly provided (Many thanks to Dean :)) and pull it out more if required, although I would imagine that will incur another cost.

I know it is a matter of principle that if a garage breaks it they should fix it, however I am so tempted to boycott to main dealership as apart from no coffee machine, no plush surrounding and not getting the vehicle washed I am receiving far more excellent service from small business.

I will keep you posted.

They break it, they fix it. It really is as simple as that. It didn't have a broken window when you dropped it off, now the window is smashed. There's no way they can umm and arrgghh about it. I told a mate at work about it and he'd had something similar. He took the car into a garage to get it fixed and they accidentally broke one of the headlights on the doorway of the garage. They didn't want to pay up either but it is solely they're responsibility and in the end they had to.

I agree, just tired and wish it fixed.

Previous I had a Merc S class and the dealer had the same sort of attitude. The Landy is a far easier vehicle to work on and repair than a Merc (Apart from the stupid BMW rear window mechanism) so I just do not wish any contact with Official Dealers again.

Yes they should fix it, but, not prepared to do so without charging.

Conclusion:

Dent repaired, window replaced and all working. Out of pocket £275 for dealer to replace mechanism and smash window, £80 for dent removal and replacement glass (Supplied by Dean) fitted and calibrated.

The £275 hurts, but at least I have it back with rear window. Last time I will go anywhere near a Land Rover Authorised dealer.

Farewell Pentland Land Rover.

right here is what to do take your bill to them and say if you do not get any satisfaction then you will see them in the small claims court and watch their faces and be very insistence on it .

Thanks, it's worth a try although I am pretty sure we do not have a small claims court in Scotland.

They do have a small claims court in England. Go visit your local dealer and if they refuse to pay, send a copy of the bill to LR head office in Coventry - tell them it's the last 'free' communication you will make on the matter and all other letters, visits, lawyers etc will be chargeable. Be polite and explain that you're pushed to this course of action due to the very bad service from your local LR dealer.

The way I see it - you've already written off the money paid so any return will be a positive. If Coventry give you the run around too, post your experience to all the local papers etc. You can put the spin on a great service by the local non LR garage, therefore not defaming LR and the only cost to you is the stamps. Only go down this route when all other options are exhausted 'cos it'll burn any bridges left.

I had to go down the 'get nasty' route with Ford about 10 years ago. After 3 months of arguing I finally requested (by email) for them to confirm when my repair would be completed - attaching all previous correspondence and invoices etc. I copied this to EVERY ford dealer in the UK (managers, customer relations, general enquiries, sales, spare parts each got a separate email). I sent the email on a sat night knowing Sun was closed - I got my repair done on the Monday morning, + a free major service - all that hassle for a £50 part at the time.

You are correct when you say I have basically written the cost off, at £75 it was a lot cheaper than a dealer would have done. The Glass was free, OK cost some biscuits and cakes courteously of Dean (Not the biscuits and cakes, the glass) , but there you go.

The attitude, well we have replaced the mechanism at a highly inflated price, your Technician did not notice the Glass was fouled by a bash in the door and that is not our problem, it is there's, it stinks.

If you are with Landrover Customer Relationship Centre, perhaps you should ask the question about service, and Land Rover should at least apologise for there dealers cock up.

Thanks for reply,

Thanks for reply,

I'm not with LR, just posted their address for you to use if you want to - it's really up to you now whether you want to walk away with the loss or try to force LR's hand, only you can do this - they won't read the forum and come and appologise, you need to make them.

Basically we have decided to put it down to "a learning experience" and bury it. However an extremely polite letter is about to be sent of to Land Rover in Coventry.

If any response is received I will let you all know.

Thanks for all your help and support.

errrr no he didn't......
I have phoned my friend who is a barrister and he says but please do not quote me it is their fault ,the mechanic should have looked more at the problem and should have noticed that the window was not capable of moving and therefor should not have attempted to do anything about it.

Have emailed LR and copied in Pentland Land Rover about a week ago.

Received no response so far.
