Went to start my '93 200 disco earlier and it's battery is flat as a pancake. Nothing at all was left on overnight and it worked absolutely fine yesterday evening. Only thing I noticed yesterday was that the rev counter went off when I was doing a lane, which happens for a minute if it gets wet, but the lane was dry as a bone.

After I jump started it and it was running, after about 5 minutes of running the alternator was getting really really really chuffin hot and was smoking a wee bit.

Any thoughts? Obviously the alternator is fecked, any ideas why and as to why the battery went flat overnight with nothing left on?

Cheers everyone.

If it got hot there might have been some crap in it from laning, but it's also possible a winding became unsoldered/welded (whichever) bent and created a short which drained the battery.

Sounds a bit like the regulator has fecked, putting battery voltage onto the rotor, giving max output, if so if you did a long trip you'd fry the battery.

sounds like the rectifier is knackered causing a "field" in the alternator. you will probably find that your battery light as stopped working but if you disconnect the main wire on the back of the alt your battery light will come on! in short your alternator is feeding back and causing a short which in turn kills your battery!

Yeah I noticed that so I've disconnected the battery. Should have the new alternator tomorrow at some stage. Fookin landys!! You love em, but they rarely love you back lol.
