Just bought a shed of a 2 1/4 1978 109SW, cheap:)

Ex owner's had it for 20 years, reckons after an engine rebuild (dropped a injector hot spot) and was then treated to new rings & bores honed, new 2.5 cylinder head) he got within a mile of his house on initial test drive and it conked out  took the sump off and there was a coolant leak from a hole/crack in one of the bores

Any thoughts, in my experience this lump is fairly solid and can't see a bore leaking like that!!

Cheers

Filled her up with coolant just to have a look, dripping like mad from rear cylinder bore, was hoping it was going to be a wrong gasket problem so I whipped the head off, not good half the bolts down the right hand side of the head were'nt tight!! Head looks good though.Further investigation releaves that water is leaking from at least 2 spots about 2 cm up from the bottom of the rear bore!!

Worth bothering with???, how easy to get a liner and more to the point how easy to change??????????

Cheers Jason

I've heard this happening before, isnt there a core plug somewhere round that point.
Someone will be along anytime who knows.

Yeah I was wonderin if thats what you meant.
If your sure water is ****ing through the cylinder wall into the bore the blocks fecked, a liner might sort the issue out but you'd still have a weakend block with a crack in it.
That said though I've never had that problem so maybe someone else can give you better pointers.
Its more likely to be the head basket, and sounds very much like it is, if the bolts were loose its probably gone.
You can do a blow down check on the suspect bore, I suggest you do this, or have it done, you could just tighten up the headbolts to the required spec beforehand, and replace the gasket if the test passes.

if its leakin on the outside its a core plug, if its inside ts either a crack or water in the oilways, that leads to head gasket problems, have you tightened all the head bolts up again and tried it

is ther obvious crackin in the liners?

the liners can be changed, but i doubt they will need it, ther a solid hard wearing block,

worst the blocks cracked / been frozen and lettin water in the oil thru the coolin jacket

From another site/

Hi Jason

The 2 1/4 is bored out of the block - no liners

that sounds like a cracked block so me to look for another engine i reckon

cheers

Jason dont bin yer old motor yet.
I just read your first post again.
You said you had work done, then you drove 1/2 mile and it leaked, then you found loose head bolts.
Thinking laterally Id say the water leak was caused by the loose bolts not a cracked block, maybe someones put you on the wrong path.
Tighten the bolts in the right order to the right torque and try again.

ere doc, refer to post 7 ;)

i always give it a second try ,

ther dont sound much up with it ter be honest , bit of a false start so to say

Naa! You have mis-understood!

The sump is off and I can see water pishing out of at least 2 holes in the bottom of N° 4 bore.

Thanks all the same ;)
