I love my series 3, and every day seems to see the arrival of a new part etc etc but the dash board is well, wanting, the choke retaining plate has given way so i now have a hole, the previous owner abandoned the original ignition switch in the column and cut another hole, so my question is, does anybody produce a more modern version, perhaps with rev counter, amp meter, clock that sort of thing or has anyone got any tips on how to fabricate one (with my limited ability that is!!):)

i can make you 1 if you want
just tell me what and where you want it and i can cut 1 from alli and mount your bits in there
pm me if interested
i see if i can find the pic of mine with built in tomtom for my s2a

I wonder if that tom tom as a speedo will pass the mot.
Looks ok though.
I've made centre consoles out of mdf a couple of times, its not hard to work with and looks ok.

For a MOT you do need a counter thingy (forgotten the word) - so - although a speedo is not technically tested, if you don't have any way of counting the miles its done its apparently a fail.

mines got a speedo fitted but the cable isn't fitted to the gear box, passed mot with it a year ago, (still haven't fixed it though)

Yup, ok, i might be wrong on that one. I've been reading through the MOT spec (found here: m3i00000101

And haven't found anything about speedometers (though haven't read it all yet)

only thing from the dash that is any part of an mot is the indicator light such as blue high beam indicator light
the gauges have nothing to do with it at all
as for the odometer (millage) not needed all they do is put down millage not recorded on the paperork

There is no way I would personally change the main part of the dash on the Series - this woul detract from its character in my opinion. Instead I opted for adding in a few extra panels for the extra bits and bobs I have...

Panel to the left of the steering wheel. Have added indicator lights, switches for driving lights, window washers, heater and moved the ignition switch and lights here:

And to the right of the steerign wheel I have the dual battery gauge - I tried to get one that was as least modern looking as I could find! Also have the cut off switch for the electric fan:

Back to the MOT point briefly - if my V5 states

Date of First Registration: 31 06 1974 (DECL/D MANUF 1964)

Does that mean from an MOT point of view it has to apply as a 1974 vehicle or a 1964 vehicle?

Got this hung up in the garage, it's from an old BMC ambulance. Was going to stick it in the middle of my dash when I get round to it:rolleyes:

if you mean for getting the free tax then it goes by the year the chassis was made not the first year of registration
only trouble is if its had a new chassis then your "surposed" to tell them and therefore nolonger quolify for it but mums the word

i heard you can replace the chassis but still have it tax free, you just need to get a original replacement chassis.

Nah, i know its tax free, its more that in 1965 seat belts were required for MOT's. My Landie was built in 1964, but 'first reg. for road use' in 1974 - so - do i need seatbelts for the MOT or not!? - I have harnesses which are great for off-road and i wear them on road too - but - they are not technically installed to the required specification. Perfectly safe for what i use it for, but, still, to an anal MOT person a fail...

yer its 6 of one and half a dozen of the other, you can't win, i just dont want to spend a grand plus ona chassis and then have the tax man bend me over

Half Way done this page - MOT UK car and vehicle MOT information equipment car servicing parts and spares - seat belts

"
Passenger and dual purpose vehicles with no more than 8 passenger seats

with 4 or more wheels first used on or after 1 January 1965"

It has not requirment in all of the boxes.

However, I am not 100% sure how you would class date of first use? Could have been sitting in Army stores for the first years of its life..!

Utter bollocks.

As long as it is a brand new Chassis (I.e Land Rover, Marsland or Richards) and same the orginal design it is a classed as a Direct Replacement and it would still be tax exempt. What you start running into trouble with it when you put a chassis from another Landy on it.
