Hi Defender forum.. I posted this in the broken fuel cap thread in General Landy chat, but it just disappeared from sight without so much as an additional view! As it is probably actually a specific Defender "feature" I thought I'd try it here too tho, as I know defender owners are much more pro-active to dish out the knowledge..

Basically, I have an interesting case with my '99 TD5 Defender locking diesel cap...

I can literally "prise" the black plastic cap off with my hands (whether it's locked or not) revealing the lock barrel (a red plastic tube) which itself can be easily lifted out of the white ratchet gear - and then the bottom half of the fuel cap can be loosened by hand to open the filler tube.

I can, in essence, remove my fuel cap by hand without the key (allbeit into three pieces - which I can then also re-assemble without much fuss).

This can't be standard Landy practise can it?! :confused2: Do I need to buy a new locking fuel cap (twenty quid?) or am I missing a securing screw (or a bit of no-more-nails) to stop this top half being popped off?

I don't wanna firmly attach the black plastic cap to the lock barrel or the bottom half, because if I do it would be in a state of perminent unlock, it's the spinning "top half" that needs to be secured, but with fixing it to the treaded bottom half.

I would discover this as I went all in for a full tank

Cheers guys, would like to sort this out by the weekend if I can as I'm off on a few trips where I'll be leaving the landy all over the place soon.

Why don't you just buy a new cap?

I guess I was hoping there was a fix, rather than a replace.. :( or if this was a permanent 'feature' of Defenders, I'd just have to get over it and not waste time + money on three caps to find the same issue over and over!

Cheers fella. Order is already in :)

Anyone wanna buy a second hand fuel filler cap - minor fault? ;)

Just fitted a new one from them myself today. Great price and lightning quick shipping :)
