Mines permanent 4wd, but the light only comes on when I use the difflock. Thing is, you should know what gear you're in and wether you're using h/l ratio/difflock anyway...

That light is just a warning light to let you know you've got diff lock engaged - so that you don't mangle the transmission by leaving it on on tarmac. :)

well i remember the stick was alwasye in HI range. i never took it out ever, ive never needed to..... YET! but now its in the middle in nutrel. im going to a garage tomorow an when im there ill give it a look see so streight away theres some one who can take a look at it if i mess up.

will let ya'll know how i get on

If the transfer box was really in neutral then you wouldn't be able to move anywhere at all. It must still be in high
 
dont use any other gears than normal untill you understand how they work....
they are to expensive to beak.
even then only use lock n low when you need to and as soon as you dont need it put it back to normal drive.
