are defenders in constant 4 wheel drive. i thaught they were rear wheel driven till a mechanic told me there are constant 4 wheel drive. its got me questioning my self a bit :S

i thaught they were rear wheel till you put it in low range

Ben

How have you racked up 250 posts???
Low range gives more power and means you can go slower and not slip the clutch.

aaah i see. anyone got a like i could read up on about using the diff/transfare stick

i havent found the need for it yet but would be good to know what to do when the time comes

To change into diff lock (only to be used when traction will be lost):
Be travelling at less than 10 mph and slide the lever across to the left. When the light engages, diff lock is in.
To change out of diff lock:
Slide the lever to the right and ensure that the light goes out.
If the light does not go out, stop.
Try reversing a few feet and see if it goes out. (If so, continue)
If the light still does not go out do the opposite to what you last did. (For example, if you went forward and turned left, Go backwards and left)
Engaging low range:
Take your foot off of the brakes with the clutch in in first gear.
Slide the lever forwards.
If it goes into low, stop here.
If it stops in neutral or won't go into low, raise the clutch slightly while applying gentle pressure until it slots in.
Changing into high:
Reverse the process for changing to low.

This isn't what the manual will say but nobody will disagree with it being the best way.

cheers for that mate. looks like i might have a problem with my transfairbox then. the stick is in nutrel its not in hi or low range but its still moving. i think my tranny box is goosed. what would you say?

Is yer lever to the right and down? This is where it should be so's ye can drive. Nuetral is up to the middle. Try givin' it a wiggle forward a bit to see if that stops ye movin';)

nope its in nutrel in the middle and loose. i can move the stick left to right. im scare that if i try to put it in HI it wont move at all an then ill be stuck :(

If your moving your not in neutral, even if the stick position suggests otherwise.

Unless your driving around very slowly, your also already in HI (not sure of low range speeds, but if you've been driving around in low range for months without realising, you may have a few more problems than you realise!)

Try having a look at the conector rod from under the landy, get a mate to wiggle the stick and see if the rod is moving. Could be stuck mechanism, or someone could even have disconnected it for some reason?? Do a search on stuck difflock.

It is most probably the linkage. It will be stuck in high and the linkage has gone so you can't change. See if there's any play in the linkage from underneath and report back mate.

 Bayden can't believe you've owned your 90 and been on here for a year without picking that up

I take it you've never off roaded her then? :D
correct mate i never off roaded yet. i been across flat firlds an stuff but thats it. most of the time ive had the thing it was off the road and i was doing bits and bobs getting it ready for its MOT. ive only been on the road with it for about 2-3 months so im total novice at landys mate. im hoping to get out greenlaning next year. have some people teach me how to used a landy properly :)
