Can't remember where I'd seen it, but it's how I've always started very cold diesels. And yes, it's in the handbook, now I've looked!!
 
All I can say is that it does really make a difference, in the last cold snap I'd have to keep cranking mine over for ages.. then I read the manual and tried it with the throttle to the floor and after turning over a couple of times it fires up... try it it makes a big difference...cheers
