In the past I had a few LR’s including a couple of 300tdi Discoveries. Unfortunately marriage put pay to that hobby. Anyway we have recently seperated so my Xmas present to myself has been a 1999 Discovery V8.

It’s not going to be an everyday car but not surprisingly it has a couple of Niggles I need/want to fix.

1. The top hose has been repaired and I’d like to do the job properly and change it. Looking at it it’s a fairly simple job. A few jubilee clips and then happy days. However is it really as simple as it seems or am I missing something that makes it a pig of a job?

2. When I start the engine especially when cold it seems to over Rev. I expect it to an extent but it’s about 2000rpm until I have been going for a mile. Any ideas.

Thanks

Replacing the hose is as simple as it looks, just two hose clips to release, also if required it’s an ideal time to replace the coolant completely, otherwise just replace what’s been lost with changing the hose.

Engine idle speed should drop to around 750rpm within ten seconds so something is wrong, maybe as simple as a sticking throttle cable.
The ‘idle control valve’ looks after the idle speed via information from the engine management, it’s not unknown for it to go faulty, the D1 version can be taking apart to clean, unfortunately the D2 item seems to be a sealed unit.

There’s lots of info spoken on the D2 V8 idle speed on the web so I won’t repeat it, also the LR workshop manual is a free downloaded.
