Hi everyone,
I have been having issues getting into 1st gear intermittent. As if something is blocking the gear.

Sometimes it will go in lovely and sometimes it won't. However if I lift slightly off the clutch it will go in to 1st every time.

Other gears appear to be fine most of the time but sometimes 2nd plays up and so does 4th. It doesn't seem to matter if I double clutch either the problem persists. After moving the stick back and forwards with the clutch down it finds it. Is this a selector problem or something more sinister? Below are some of my findings.

Last picture shows wear on the reverse lobe. There is also wear on the gear stick shaft which folks repair by filling with weld and grinding somooth.You don't have the original bias plate fitted. Someone has replaced it with a slick shift

The slickshift will magnify any engagement difficulties - because its designed to reduce gearlever travel at the expense of increasing the effort to move the lever.
It's probably worth trying to re-set the position of the slick shift bias plate as the symptoms you describe are often related to it being misaligned Whether it's standard or not)

For my interest why has the gear lever been cut & welded ? Normally the gearlever is almost straight.

The Slickshift was installed before I purchased the vehicle, the stick has been welded because the truck has a body lift of 2".

I had a play with it today and I ground the rough edge on the selector flat, this seemed to improve the gate but it still jams.

It is also rough going into 3rd and 4th. Second and reverse feel normal.

I'd also like to note that when the engine is off it still jams, however if I play around and move it into different gears 1st frees up and the gearbox is smooth...

Again, when running if I push the lever against 1st and lift off the clutch slightly it goes straight in. I'm baffled...

Thank you, so to confirm... The notches are not normal and shouldn't be there?
 
Is it a possibility that the 1st and 2nd fork assembly has worn? If so, how do I gain access to change it?
 
Just a quick update... I have looked at the Slickshift today. All set in place absolutely fine.

I did a trial of pumping the clutch repeatedly and then putting it into gear and it works. I have to pump the clutch 4/5 times and it will go in.

Am I looking at slave and master cylinders?
 
So when you looked at the Slickshift, you checked the gearlever was aligned correctly for (I think) 3rd / 4th ?
If you google something like " land rover R380 bias plate alignment", you should find the instructions for alignment - if you've not found them already.

Re-reading your original post, some of your symptoms can also be caused by the selector fork being loose on the selector shaft (loose retaining grubscrew) or the bottom plastic bush being worn (the one the ball on the bottom of the gear lever should locate in).
You'd have to take the slickshift off & the top cover to check the selector fork.
It's all accessible through the transmission tunnel top plate.

Hi there,

I have checked the alignment of the slickshift and it goes directly into 3rd and 4th with no sideways movement.

In one of the images I've attached shows the selector with the ball and plastic cup. Although there is wear on the reverse gear side of the selector it seems in good condition, the ball has dropped slightly and I will replace it. As for the grub screw I was practically hanging off it to get it out
 
Update:

I've changed the ball and cup, it seems to be better but I'm now having to double clutch to get it into gear.

I think I can rule out the selector as it is doing it in every gear, even if the vehicle is switched off.

Release bearing?
