Hi, I've spent this hot afternoon sealing up the rear sunroof on my disco with sealant. Changing the rubber seals, re-greasing and cleaning the drain pipes didn't work, I've had enough of it. Hardly ever open the thing so now its a fixed glass panel in the roof. Will wait and see if it still leaks. Probably.

Having completed that I was looking around for other places where the water could be getting in (and it so gets in). At the front of the roof along the top of the windscreen is a rubber strip. It does not seem to be bonded to the roof and pealing the top of it down (easy) shows a deep channel full of bits of leaf. Clearly the water runs down the front of the metal roof and straight in here. I can't see how this drains.

Any good reason why I shouldn't fill this channel with tiger seal and get it firmly stuck to the roof? Should it be firmly stuck to the roof? Pros / cons?

Thanks,

M

The void is normal, it's just a rubber finisher the are all like that, the screen shouldn't leak as it's bonded and any water behind the rubber should escape at the ends of that channel, but there's no reason why you cant fill if you wish, although no doubt it will make a replacing the screen more of a problem.

I would say seal it, recently replace the windscreen rubber on my 110 and loads of other seals and its was water tight for a couple of months, but now can at least see where tiny trickles can get in.
Dont think the windscreen seal is quite tight enough in some areas, so going to seal the whole outer edges.
As I would (did) cut the old seal off anyways if the windscreen is getting replaced it wont matter that its sealed to the glass, just means a bit more clean up and prep. :)

But 300 series discos don't have rubber windscreen seals do they, so what purpose would filling trough behind the rubber trim above the screen with sealant do?

Thanks. So where does the water go when once it's got into that rubber channel above the windscreen? If it runs to the ends it seems to go into the pillar at the side of the windscreen and I don't see any obvious point where the water would come out. (I'm getting water coming down somewhere in the passenger footwell, some of it at least is coming down the side of the footwell forward of the passenger door (where all those relays are mounted). To my mind this seems roughly in line below the end of the windscreen if the water came down the side of the screen then vertically down inside the wing / door-pillar.)

I suppose a hose pipe would be the answer.

Yes hose pipe is the answer :):) as Sunday is car wash day I looked in my rubber channel an there was a little bit of rubbish so a 20 sec blast with the hose, some of the water as far I could see runs out of the end and some goes behind the plastic vertical bit and out the bottom and when the rubber lip is touching the roof most of the water runs over the top onto the screen, check it out next time it's raining.

As for the foot well leak, a common area is a vertical seam behind the kick panel also there are a few holes covered in tape, so with the panel removed and also the L bracket dash support u will see water stains and maybe a drip, a bright torch will help and do that while it's raining.

Thanks, I'll get the hose to it, but that's not going to happen today. Will add to this thread when I've tried that.

(Car wash day? It's not a proper land rover if you wash it. :) )
