d/s break light and passenger sidelight not working !!!

after many years wishing I owned a defender 90, I've finally bought one. it's a 2008 model and I bought it for a dealer. I've realised straight away that my d/s break light and passenger sidelight not working, a friend said possible fuse but I've visually checked all the fuses under the steering wheel but they all look ok. I don't want to take back to dealership because I want to get to know my defender and fix problems my self. i'm just about to go and purchase the Haynes manual but I was wondering if anyone on here has had the same fault. TIA.
 
Side light/brake light on different fuses.
May be an earth fault.
Look in back of motor & find where the cables are connected(behind a cover) check from there.

Have you got a trailer socket?
 
From what I understand from your post, it's the combined Stop and Tail lamp that isn't working, in which case it will probably be an earth fault, unless it is a front side light and the brake light, in which case it would still probably be an earth fault.
Do you have a multimeter?
If so, you would be able to check the circuits by removing the lamps to see if you have 12V between the contacts and earth.
Next, remove the fusebox cover and check the fuses are getting a 12V supply to earth (on mine I had to remove all of the spade fuses and close the springs on both the top and bottom of the fuse holders to make certain that they all made good contact! No more problems!!)

Cheers mate. I’ve got a multi meter can’t wait to have a ho at it Monday when I get home. I’ll post my results
