Cylinder Head What would you do?

if you go for a rebore make sure you buy the pitons first and get it bored to actual piston plus clearance size, piston size can vary
Cheers, James. That makes sense.
How much can you get it bored out by?

You'd get it bored out, from memory a 10 thou bore is about the thickness of a piece of A4. Just depends on how bad your cylinder head is?
Because of the work I'd have to do on that too? Thing is, surely you don't really know what you are getting with a second hand engine.

Is this a daft idea?
Bi no means at all Al ! as discussed on phone Al your going to have to take it out any way to fix & you aint got much MOT left !
So if you go down the re/build road you may as well go the hole hog ! Top end / middle bit / and the bottom end as well ! that way you should have technically a NEW eng !! :):)

You could have had the engine out of this to tide you over and sold the rest

I nearly had a rush of blood to the head and bid on it myself 169k on the engine

To be honest, mate, this is the way I'm thinking at the moment.

I happily stand corrected :D never was very good judging thicknesses :p
Who scrutinises paper to that extent anyway  ;):p

Ha, ha you need to keep your hands in your pockets by the sound of all the Landy stuff you have at home already!

I know but 102 quid for a 300tdi I bet the seller is gutted, you could drive it straight to a scrap yard and weigh it in for more than that

Was that the final price? :(

And IF you get your backside into gear you'l have it done for it's Maiden Voyage Down to LZ13 !:rolleyes::p
LZ13  It'll not be a time machine :D I'd have to stick a flux capacitor on for that ;)

if its std start at plus 20
Is that plus 20 thou on the diameter?

This is great to know, James. I've been Googling and found a place in Gateshead that does rebores and cylinder heads, Been in business for 52 yrs, according to their website, so first impressions are good. This sort of info will be invaluable for when I'm talking to them and getting it sorted.

I'll be wanting to know about best make of piston next

yes , std is nominally 3.562 plus 20 3.582 but piston size can vary by a good few thou and clearance is only .75-1.5 thou as measured at 90 degrees to gudgeon pin at bottom of skirt, the piston skirt isnt round till it gets hot

Tremendous! :D
Can't make out that make, James. I can google it though KOLBENSCHMOT?

I've still no idea where the oil came from to spray on the bulkhead, heater box etc, and run down over the axle. Only 2 litres left in the sump, but Mrs so no smoke during the brief runaway.
Oil in the air inlet pipe to turbo. (may be a standard amount from breather over a long time)
IMG_5808_zpskyhgdtml.jpg

No split in head gasket to force it through there though, so the above could be 'normal'.
Lots of oil in intercooler inlet that wasn't there before when I took it off during the rebuild.

For some reason the manifold gasket was cracked, big style, at both ends. Through the air inlet ports.

The turbo blade movement didn't seem that bad. But, the best I can come up with is that the turbo was pulling oil through the bearing seals, forcing it through the intercooler, the cracks in the manifold gasket were allowing the oil to be forced out in to the engine bay. Maybe creeping out and getting blown around. I did have a leak, but I thought it was the cyclone breather O ring.
I'm just putting my thoughts down here, but would appreciate another theory or any support of this one.
