Ok so I sold my p38 (with a tow bar) and now have a 2003 vogue - which doesnt have a tow bar.

Im looking to put 3 bikes on the back of the RR somehow but I cant find anyone who can tell me if one of those strap rear mounted type carriers that you get from Halfords will fit properly on the back of the RR. Does anyone know ?

The only alternative seems to be to get another tow bar fitted and the main dealier has quoted £1000 for this to be done - which is a bit steep just to carry the kids bikes to the local cycle track - if I cant get a rear mounted one does anyone have any ideas or reccomendations for alternative (ie cheaper) tow bars ?

Thanks

Dont have a L322 RR but I thought all the new Range Rovers came with the hitch receiver. So all you have to do is pop off a cover and slot in a towbar?? Are you sure you dont have that receiver bit already fitted?? If so you can just get the bit that slots into it with the towball on from somewhere like eBay.

afraid not - main dealer has quoted me £1000 to fit a LR approved one

independant tow bar deealers are quoting £500 for a fixed one but wont guarantee that it wont interfere with the reverse parking sensors !!

i bought a cycle carrier for the back of my car recently. i bought it from a proper bike shop not halfords. it works very well although they can come off but only if they are not put on properly. also even though they say 3 bike carrier, realistically you will only get 2 on comfortably. the most common mistake people make is putting the rack on the car and making sure it is on tight then loading bikes on and not checking again as the extra weight can make the bottom straps loose.

I have an L322 and for the same reason looked at fitting a tow bar myself but found that anything other than Land Rover supplied tow bar systems involved cutting the rear bumper so check carefully before you buy! I wasn't prepared to pay what I felt was silly money Land Rover wanted for a tow bar I would rarely use.

Instead I regularly carry bikes on the back during family holidays using the universal bike carrier with straps you describe. The carrier I bought was Halfords own make which I load with three bikes. I also bought and fitted the Land Rover roof bars (brand new on Ebay £100). The bars are quite wide and Land Rover did not supply bike carrier to fit these bars. However with a bit of research I found a company who supply bike carriers that do fit! In addition to the three bikes on the back I load two on the roof bars together with a Thule roof box. It looks like a G4 expedition on family holidays!

If you need details of bike carriers to fit roof bars let me know.

bonetti & big hammerfan

thanks for your help guys - really usefull info.

Bonetti - can you let me have the details of the roof mounted bike carriers please - also how do you get them on the roof ? unless youve got g4 ladders or are 7ft tall ?

thanks again

The cycle carriers are 'Fapa Velo' they fit roof bars from 30 - 80mm wide. I have attached a link that takes you to a website advertising them.

Fapa VELO 30-80mm bike carrier - FP270

I fit them by dropping my suspension and standing on the rear wheels. When lifted up into position you will see they are supported by struts which snap lock and for added security have a key lock.
