My girlfriends TD4 was making a horrible knocking sound and there was vibration in the steering, especially when turning left. Is suspected it was the CV joint and peeled the boot back to find the grease had all gone solid and the drive shaft rattles loudly when pushed side to side.
No problem, I thought. i'll just replace the drive shaft, however...
When i grab inboard end of the drive shaft there seems an awful lot of play in the up/down and side/side direction. I suspect there might be a problem with the gearbox output shaft bearing. (Nearside so not IRD).
Is this a problem that any body else has seen?
There isn't any oil leaking from the shaft area. I would have thought the shaft rattling around in this area would disturb the oil seal and cause it to leak. Any ideas?
