CV Joints

Im putting new CV joints in my axle and there are two types for the age; 32 and 23 internal splines. Im chainging the half shafts too, my question is this - If I buy both half shaft and CV joint with the same no. of internal splines, does it matter which I have already? My landy is my everyday car so I dont want to pull it to bits to find out which one I have then wait for the parts to be delivered, as I'll have no car! :doh:

I have loads of drive slack and i have to take it up gently befor i can pull away, so Im trying to solve that at the moment.

Hi Woods,

Don't buy britpart shafts I did and I broke one after 100 miles and one comp these were salisbury shafts.
Question what drive flanges do you have currently? because you may need to change the stub axle hub assy dependant on year and current drive members.

Co you have the old type deep drive members or newer skinny drive members on the front?

Old deep type flanges should be fitted to pre defenders and some early defenders pre 1993/4 ish they should be the stronger 32 spline ones ones and the skinny fronts are later type I believe.

If you have the deeper type then the stub axles are different because the bearings are inboard more in the hub and the hub nut does not protrude as far. Thus the cV joint is shorter and the skinny thin drive members are used. hope this helps

Get the axle number and give it to your supplier first!!

Thanks Jai, I have the wider type, ive seen the thinner type on other land rovers. Paddocks say 1986 onwards for there 32 spline kit though, and my land rover is registered as an 1987, but has "B" stamped on the chassis plate, which means itas a year or two older. :dizzy: So i always have problems matching parts on the axles!

And at that age, you're unlikely to find the numbers stamped onto the axle case!

Part numbers you should need (upto KA chassis number) are FRC3890 and FRC3891, this is the CV with shaft.
CV alone AEU2522
Shafts AEU2520 (RH) and AEU2521 (LH), removed from service by LR, but still available from everyones favourite! TBH, never had a problem myself, and have used lots over the years.
