Hi my 1994 P38 4.0l Petrol/LPG 160000 miles isnt happy i broke down last night the engine was running rough all day cut out a couple of times on LPG so turned it off and then cut out on petrol, evey time it cut out it took a little longer to start again the last time it stopped I managed to restart it but was miss firing bad.
RAC came out good mechanic tested spark, fuel injectors with cool little tool, he then sprayed easy start on full throttle fired up smooth at 3000+rpm then went to idle and stopped, the mechanic reccomended testing fuel pressure and changing of fuel filter his diognosis was low fuel pressure but had no equipment to test it, wife came and towed me home no RAC flat bed avaible.
went out this afternoon truck started first time ran it for about 10min I stopped it then changed fuel filter, restarted engine ran it on LPG and petrol in park for about 45 minutes the it stopped i left it for about 15 min and restarted it and had bad miss fire.
went out this morning started engine it was rough with bad missfire, I'm stumped dont know were to start Thanks Hayden

Hi thanks for the help, I had a look yesterday around the engine and round that the ht leads where badly perished originals I think, I also checked the spark plugs very sooty they are at least 4 years old, I changed both plugs and leads the engine seems to be ok, what the plugs and leads cause the fault i will also check out the sensor is there any tests i can carry out on it many thanks Hayden

assuming you have just bought the car and have a reasonable amount of intelligence.

you have said that the leads were worn and the plugs, have you bothered to change the oil and filter and also air filter?

what about coolant?

you need to get a handle on the servicing otherwise you will end up with a dead range rover and you will be on here moaning about how crap they are!!!

it amazes me that car owners need to be reminded that thier car needs servicing!!!

you shouldnt own a range rover if you cant be responsible!!!

rant over!!!

Erhmm I sincerely hope that Ive misunderstood what you mean gavbriggs because I read your reply as if you're saying he's a lazy bugger who does nothing but asking questions - and then does nothing about them anyway - and end up moaning about poor quality....

To me it looks like he's trying to sort things out and is in need of advice of which steps to take.... Maybe he doesn't have enough coolant, oil and whatever parts/stuff at hand, so he can change all those things right away.
I totally agree with you gavbriggs - find out of the servicehistory - if dodgy: Make a full service first - and then look at things.

I really hope I misread your comment and if so I apologize - if not.... disappointed might be one word that would cross my mind...

Besides from that: Happy New Year

Hello and happy new year to you all!
Not Lazy! Carried out full service filters and oils, replaced oil pump after taking off front cover for inspection, changed EAS system complete next week i will be replacing the camshaft and top end overhaul.
Definitely not lazy just inexperienced on range rovers, give me a ducati 916 and i can strip it down blindfolded!.... RANT OVER!
Thanks for all advice given, just to say i love my Range Rover its my dream car that’s why i am trying my best to keep it on the road.

you read the post as it is, i just get annoyed when ppl dont look after thier belongings and then want advice on how to fix it, obviously this time he's sorted stuff out and there seems to be an issue but from the first post it seemed like a thread about an owner who could be arsed, that said i doubt he can strip a ducati or any other vehicle down blindfolded!!!

i could strip a v8 down with a fridge tied to my back but what would be the point!!!

my point is we need to look after things and explain in detail what the current history of the car is!!

look at the ingnition leads/coil pack etc, what state is the alternator? can you explain if lpg and petrol differ in the idle/running? does it pick up when changing fuels? what state is the air intake?

i reckon ignition system is in bad repair, try to look at it at night in a dark place, see if you can see any arcing around the leads/plugs. also get it on a laptop and see what the readings from the maff and o2 sensors are

poorly maintained p38's are a cause of many issues, keep on top of the maintenance and limit problems, servicing costs are high but try and do what you can yourself.
