Having replaced the waterpump nearly 2 years ago, last night the temperature started to climb.. switched off let it cool down and continued on home, up steep hills, the temperature remained steady at the mid position on the couple of miles home..

about 6 months ago, i had a temp rise indicated, switched off immediately, waited a couple of minutes restarted and temp was fine, in the usual position.. continued the remaining half an hour home with temp rise and everyting A-OK. thought it may have had an airlock so bled out any air, its been fine since..

Done a few couple of hundred mile round trips, towed heavy trailers up and down hills, sat in traffic etc etc since then, all been fine and dandy !!

Anyone any ideas ?

I cannot for the life of me remember which brand water pump was supplied. was it a ****part one ??

Thinking it can only be pump or T-stat as there is no leaking, no oil contamination ..

maybe the pump vanes are not seated well on the shaft wondering if i should change the waterpump (along with the t-stat)

Any thoughts?

Plastic water pump impellers slip on the shaft. Petrol or diesel? On either it could be the viscous fan failing to lock up at times. On the V8 I dread to think of the other possibilities.

Oh Keith.. Please !!! It's a petrol of course !.

i did notice the viscous fan was spinning freely

Run engine til it's hot, put your fingers in fan, if it stops and you just have a few cut fingers it's knackered, if you have no fingers it's ok. :D:D

i dont get what you mean wammers.. you're going to have to demonstrate for me !

change the pump viscous n stat all at the same time drill a 3 mm hole in the outer edge of the stat to avoid air locks n aid cooling im doing mine again soon i fitted a **** part water pump when i got it i didnt know any better then.

Cheers dave.. will do.. just pop your card details on over :D

Arse! .. having just checked the recepit.. i think it may have been a ****part one.

Though i dont think i would have fitted one with a plastic impeller.. i would need beating with a stick if i did. just don't like them due to blades breaking up and blocking the water channels.

Ok here's a recommendation... LR Trade Parts.

Bearmach pump 28.00
Bearmach Viscous fan 32.00
Allmakes T-Stat 15.00

Vat and shipping inlcuded. !

Spray some Plus Gas down the front of the viscous fan where the bi-metalic coil that operates the lock up lives. The shaft rusts up where it goes into the coupling.

Proper stat was about £33 on Island last year, IIRC. About the same as the proper pump with the metal impeller! I was feeling a bit tight so I bought the Britpart one for a fiver. Have to say it has been perfect so far.

New T-stat, viscous fan and waterpump fitted earlier today, just took it for a test run to Sainsbury's and all seems to be good.

The old t-stat while discoulored seemed clean, but looking at the coolan staining it's been on there for a good while !

The waterpump, had no bearing play the metal impeller was intact with no fouling, so that one can go back on the shelf for future use.. about 19 months of use. for the sake of 30 quid, it was worth changing no point in getting a bent head over £30 !!

The new viscous fan unit seemed a lot tighter than the old one, some corrosion on the coil,
