Cummins is one of the world's major diesel engine manufacturers, and its products are used for boats, trucks and power generation. The Cummins 6BT gained fame as the first "truck" diesel engine to be installed in a pickup truck. Interesting facts separate the 6BT from other diesel competitors.
Function
1. The 6BT designation provides information on the engine's specifics. The "6" indicates 6 cylinders. Cummins uses letters to indicate different engine sizes: A, B, C, L and M. "B" series engines have a displacement of about one liter per cylinder. The "T" designates a turbo-charged motor. Put it together and the 6BT is a 6-cylinder, turbo-charged diesel engine displacing 5.9 liters.
History
2. The 6BT was a collaboration between Cummins and Case Corp. to develop a diesel engine for Case's agricultural and construction equipment. The engine was first used in Case equipment in 1984. In 1989, Chrysler Corp. selected the B series as an engine option for the Dodge Ram heavy-duty pickup. The "12-valve" Cummins, as it is also called, was extremely popular with truck enthusiasts. In 1998, the 6BT was replaced with the 24-valve B-series Cummins, designated the ISB.
Significance
3. The 6BT changed the way pickup owners viewed diesel engines. The Cummins motor was designed with extreme durability, like all heavy truck engines. The 6-cylinder design is less costly to maintain and easier to service. The Cummins had a design life of 400,000 miles, and many Dodge Ram owners far exceeded that with their trucks. Dodge was the last of the Big 3 truck manufacturers to offer a diesel engine, but their choice of the Cummins 6BT forced General Motors and Ford to scramble for years to find a competitive powerplant.
Ratings
4. The 6BT has a displacement of 359 cubic inches, or 5.9 liters. The design includes 2 valves per cylinder, direct fuel injection and turbo-charging. The first 6BT in the Dodge produced 160 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. In 1994, the power increased to 175 hp/420 torque, and 1996 saw the power bumped to 215 hp and 440 lb-ft. The engine holds 11 quarts of oil.
Potential
5. More than 10 years after it was last installed in a new Dodge pickup, the 6BT remains popular and is used as a replacement motor in all kinds of vehicles and boats. The engine's durability and wide range of aftermarket performance options allow enthusiasts to rebuild 6BTs with high horsepower and lots of pulling power.
