I know the sort of problems you`ve overcome due to my years of racing builds.
I was lucky with propshafts as I shortened my own ones that worked very well.
done all the prop work in a old`ish colchester lathe at my then works.
was a simple thing for me, but engineering was my trade.

yep, top marks for the way you tackled the change over..
must make loads of difference in sheer grunt power.

I did fancy doing the props myself, but I just haven't got the kit to do it, or not to do it properly, it'd end up guess work and I don't want them running out.

Those diesel american pickup trucks are tuned intentionally to smoke like that, some even have kits fitted to do it, it's got little to do with power. It is also about to get banned in one state and quite rightly so, I don't mind a big diesel but I do object to silly arse americans dumping clouds of black diesel soot into the atmosphere. What's even worse is that they don't seem to understand tuning and think black clouds = big power. Mind you in a country where they need 4.5litres to make the same power we can do in 1.9litres what do you expect.

They really are very dense and naive these guys, if you read comments on youtube you get guys explaining how diesels need to black smoke to make lots of power and it's normal - what they also don't seem to understand is that diesel exhaust is actually pretty horrendous stuff. They might as well go into a spray booth everyday with no mask on.

I'm also surprised that in a country with an environmental agency like the EPA, who will see you in court if you leak too much oil onto the drive, let them away with this.

Anyway rant over, your 90 looks excellent, your doing some good work and I look forward to seeing videos of it running and driving about - with a good clean tune on it!

What the yanks do certainly is pointless, and mine certainly wont be anything like that, as you say a good pump tweek shouldn't give bellows of black smoke but a little bits as on tdi's is acceptable.
I won't be going stupid anyway as I'll be to worried about breaking things i.e axle components :eek:

Not sure if you still are out of work or not mate but seems like you have the foundations to start a niche conversion company for this type of thing! Theres plenty of people who have a big bank account without the ability to do this sort of thing... This is where people like you could charge a tidy sum to do it! Imagine footballers etc who want a brutal winter hack...

If I said I hadn't thought about it I'd be lying, not just conversion based, just lr's in general.
On the conversion front I'd want mine on the road and proved before I did anything.
Not sure if there would be a market or not as it wouldn't be cheap for a conversion.

Sooo.... finally bought some props.
Ended up buying from kay supplies and components in Cheshire
Couldn't recommend more to be honest, fast turn around and the price was less than I thought it would be.
So if I ever need anymore (likely) I'll be back.

I just gave him a flange to flange measurement and he did the rest.
Front - 752mm
Rear - 570mm
Fitted yesterday afternoon and fit perfect :)

Well I'd forgot about this thread. Although I haven't touched it since anyhow due to lack of money (Still).
But been busy with another project.

But we was then offered a chassis locally for reasonable money.
So that was it, a rebuild was on the cards. The original chassis wanted a couple of patches anyway, so seemed a good solution :D

So the strip down started at the end of November.

I then decided I'd try and paint the body while it was in bits as it makes it easier for me.
But with temperatures at about 2-4 degrees it wasn't really ideal. I've not even got room for a heater in the shed where I'm doing it.
So it's not perfect, but a darn sight better than before :eek:

Windscreen was fitted along with new rubber, although the first one broke :rolleyes:
Then the last body parts to go on are the wings.
As with them fitted and bolted tight you can't alter the bulkhead in order to get reasonable door gaps.
Made that mistake on my first project :eek:

Which meant I could finally fit the rear door card.

The old door seal was pretty non existent, so bought a new one along with a stainless retainer.
Ridiculous amount of crud and crap built up under the old one.

Interior looks tidier with seat having re-trimmed and new cubby box.
Fitted passenger door card with new fittings.
But still need to find a drivers one as old one is f*cked. Not to forget a seat belt buckle that's also missing half it's plastic casing.

I umm'ed and ah'ed for ages about whether to get a galv bumper or a black one.
In the end I decided to get galv and if it looks **** I can always paint it and still have a galv bumper.

Door card can be fitted as and when we find one.
And needs a bloody good clean.

So with this one done and out the way maybe I should do something on my own project.
I've got a little bit of work now, so hopefully I should be able to buy a few parts that are needed to finish it.
Main problem is, I actually can't be arsed anymore, kinda lost interest which is a first for me. Probably because if I left it as it was the extra money spent could have been spent elsewhere and would have been on the road 6 months ago.
But nevertheless, when it's done it will be well worth the wait :)

I would like to start another project, but I need to finish what I have first, because it's silly having that amount of money sat there doing nothing, and needs using and to be enjoyed after all the hours that have gone into it.

About to start a build. You seem to have a nice finish on your axles and other bits.
Firstly, do you wire brush your axles/parts? Secondly, do you spray finish or just with a brush? Do you use undercoat?

I have used Hammerite smooth previously but there is never a nice smooth finish at the end.

Love the build threads. Definitely inspires one to take the plunge. Whether just wishful thinking only time will tell!!:D

Axles and other bits are prepped with a wire wheel on the grinder, and wire wheel on a drill for the harder to reach area's.
Just takes time. Shot blasting would be the easy way, if cost isn't an issue.

Most parts are brush painted with Rustoleum combi-colour.
Very good paint and I don't use an undercoat as it's a direct to metal paint.
You could use red oxide or the like if you wish, but you can get good results without.

I'd say take the plunge! I've loved doing every one of mine :)
