Crunchy brakes?

Could be the return spring creaking - if the pedal goes all the way down it's time to look at the pads/discs/fluid levels and bleed the system.

I'm assuming you mean on the disco? My p38 does something similar now and then but then it's fine for ages.. i think it's that the abs vacuum is depleted and hasn't had a chance to recover, cause it's usually when braking at the end of the drive just after start up, and then it's fine.

It doesn't happen all the time but twice in the last couple of weeks when coming to a halt, I'll keep an eye on it until I can get it into the garage.

Only if your moving .
Of course we don't know if this is on an MTB, a lawnmower or his 2CV?

Well I posted in general land rover chat so that might narrow it down :p

300tdi Discovery.

No fault lights, a few weeks ago the brake warning light/ handbrake light was flashing so the brake fluid was topped up. Since then everything has been as it should be, no flashing (!) light and the abs light coming on with ignition and going off after a few seconds.

I think it's just normal behaviour but we're not used to it. When I think back (only a couple of months) when I was doing emergency stops on my driving lesson it was a similar feeling/ noise and that was in a new fiesta.

I experienced abs for the first time today in the works van on the snow/ice, it felt damage was being done to the brakes, but I'm told thats normal

It's astonishing how many drivers don't know what abs feels like 'cos it's never operated - they only find out when it snows.
