Hi All. Fab forum! Stumbled across it whilst looking for advice on ignition timing for my series III.

Thought I'd ask for your collective wisdom on another problem. My gearbox is having a few issues. Firstly it crunches into second quite badly, but only when it's done few miles. When I drive him first thing in the morning it's sweet as a nut. Iit also leaks a bit of oil from somewhere around the gear lever input, and also occasionally gets stuck in reverse. The spring has also gone on reverse.

Firstly is it normal for syncro's to crunch when warm but not when cold? Could it be that it's overheating cos it's got the wrong grade of oil in? I've not changed it yet as it looked to be at the right level when I bought it.

Secondly is it worth trying to fix all the above, or should I just get a recon box? If so how easy is it to fit? Is there anything that can be done without resorting to removing the box?

Hope you can help!

Thanks for the reply. I'm pretty sure the clutch is ok as I had to replace the engine after only having the truck for a week. In fact the engine siezed on the way home from buying it (first landy and I think I got "done") but thankfully i found a cheap replacement from a local specialist. The replacement engine is a 2286 petrol from an early 90 and runs well enough. I took the clutch off the old engine and inspected it and it all seemed ok before fitting it to the new engine. It crunched into 2nd before the change it I recon it's a problem with the box. Unless its the clutch release? Don't really know much about gears! Any help would be most appreciated.

Matt

PS Brian is the landrover! Don't ask me why, but the wife thought he looked like a Brian!

If its ok on third and fourth it's possible that your Land Rover may have a series 2 box (probably a recon replacement). These are only synchro on third and fourth. Try double de-clutching and see if it improves.

Regards WP.

I thought about that but there is no problem with first crunching, and the probelm only presents after a few miles. Doubling the clutch does help which leads me to think it is something to do with the syncro, but I don't know why it only does it once it's warmed up! Very strange!

Hey!
I have a series 2a with a series 3 gearbox.

The syncro is a bit worn on my 1st and 2nd gear.
It crunches intermitently when down shifting.

I looked into it and apparently its just one of those things...?
I have a Replacement Series 3 gearbox that im keeping spare in my cellar for just incase.

Its been like that for months, and i use mine daily.
I reccomend you get hold of as many spares and keep them in stores.

I always get offered cheap parts and i keep them, because when you need something you either cant find one or you have to give your right arm for one!

But with regards to the gearbox, just make sure there's enough oil in it and learn how to double de-clutch!

Carl.

really very simple.
but much easier with 2 strong men. its bloody heavy.

allow bout half a day.

the book says its a 8 manhour job, ifin you know what you is doing. however it can be done in four hours by one man, if its a ex mod landy.

When the baulk ring on the sychro gets hot it will expand, if it is worn enough the expansion will be enough to stop it driving off its taper and stop it working.
Could it be that it's overheating cos it's got the wrong grade of oil in?
Wouldn't have though it would overheat but if the oils to thick then gearchanges could become more difficult.
Secondly is it worth trying to fix all the above
If you've got the space and the tools and a bit of mechanical knowhow it's not that difficult.

Thanks! My landy is ex mod but doesn't have a removable cross member for some reason. I think mine was a civy model bought up my the MOD in the good ol' days when they had spare cash! Will have to come out of the top then!

Will I have to bleed the clutch afterwards?

thats why you tie it up wiffthe wire.. ah mean tie it up wiff the wire so that the piston can't come out.you know? like wiff the wire going from front to back of the cyl. ah draw you a piccy but ah just used me pen to clean the bong
