Whats ideal for cruising in my s3 lwb with overdrive? I just want to make sure as I seem to never have any diesel so was wandering if I was cruising to quickly? Im sure I'm not getting more than 12 mpg but I got around 18 mpg when I first had it!
Just noticed your mpg figures somethings not right , as they should manage about 25 ,
It's an interesting subject. I don't have overdrive and find that mine seems most comfortable at about 45mph. I'm on 7.50 x R16 tyre. 50mph sounds a little bit thrashy and I am reluctant to venture over this.
I recall reading that diesel engines are best cruising at about 80% of their max rpm to avoid scoring the bores but I have no idea what that equates to in mph. I'm no engineer so don't know if this is accurate.
agreed. i have the same setup as you and pootle about at between 40-45mph. at these speeds i can get as much as 30mpg if i roll down the hills.
i managed 60mph once but everything was shacking and rattling so much i lost my bottle and slowed down.
Cruising and Speed, two words not usually heard in relation to diesel Land Rovers :crazy_driver:
It is difficult sometimes and you can feel pressured to press on if you have a few cars building behind you on A roads. I don't think other motorists realise that these old girls don't do fast - they look too much like Defenders from the rear and there is an expectation that they should be able to shift quicker. They're much more at home on winding country lanes where you can peer over the top of hedgerows taking in the view.![]()
