Been replacing all my fluids in my Fl1 TD4 and found a creamy coloured substance in the expansion tank. I dont have any overheating problems, oil looks ok, no water leaks, had the car 6 months and never topped up the coolant so a bit confused. Ive had the tank off and cleaned it out and gonna do a rad flush today. Im hoping its just old and never been changed and not a hg. Any advice would be appreciated

It's unlikely to be the HG. However the oil cooler on the TD4 is a know week point. When they fail, they put oil into the coolant. You need to decide of it's remnants of oil from a previous cooler replacement, or the current cooler is just beginning to fail.

Thanks Nodge I agree the hg I believe is ok I don't get any of the tell tale signs but the oil cooler mmm maybe your right.
I've only had the car 6 months and it runs great, I'm gonna flush the radiator today and put some inhibitor etc in and hope it keeps clean. Is there any way of testing the oil cooler ? And is it a big job to change it ?

Flush the coolant when it's hot, or any oil simply thickens up and stays put.

Avoid anything other than OAT coolant, as modern engines areare good with other fluids in the system.

Not really. However if it looks shiny, then it's probably a replacement.
And is it a big job to change it ?

Not a big job, but it does require the intake manifold to be removed to gain access to it.

As a side note. While the intake manifold is off, it's a wise idea to clean the accumulated goop out of it. I would also replace the starter contactor set while the manifold is off, as those have a habit of failing, requiring the intake manifold to be removed to gain access.

Thanks Nodge I'll start with flush and let you know how I get on, next step if it reappears I'll replace the oil cooler. Keep you posted m8 and thanks again

It's this.

It's the main contacts in the starter solenoid. These wear out quite quickly, and require the intake manifold to be removed to access the starter. The contactor set is cheap to buy, so definitely worth replacing while the manifold is off.

Thanks m8 ive just ordered the oil cooler / expansion tank i will add this set to it. Will let everyone know how i get on. Cheers Nodge
