Crank Speed Sensor

2001.DHSE

So Hawkeye throws Engine Speed Sensor up as faulty, so I assume it means Crank Speed sensor.

However, it also shows Crank Speed and Engine Speed as the same when I throttle up!

So is the Crank Speed Sensor working OK?

Engine speed sensor, I can only guess that you are right that its the crank position sensor, but if by engine speed you mean rpm I'm not sure. CPS and Needle lift sensor should be around the same.
Hawkeye does have some problems.

Thanks Keith, yeah life was getting boring, so I went looking for it! Yes Hawkeye is a bit Crappy. Does not show Needle
lift sensor sadly, unless that is the Engine Speed reading.

Hawkeye only shows you what is stored in the ECM. Try clearing the fault and see if it comes back.
The Nanocom also displays if the fault is intermittent or permanent. For the time I had a Hawkeye I never had any ECM faults so I'm not sure if the Hawkeye also shows this?

Are you using v5 or v6?
One of the upgrades on V6 was that it started showing separate outputs for the CPS and needle injector. On V5 I never knew which sensor was used for the "engine speed" output..

What actual fault does the car show in service ?
Couple of things,if the crank sensor is too poor or missing the engine ecu will use the needle lift sensor,(Unlike the petrol P38s it has a backup)you can tell when this is happening because the engine will have a higher idle speed.This is to prevent stalling as fuelling is cut out altogether on overrun.
Also the crank sensor is there not just for actual rpm,one of its primary functions is to provide info to control injection timing in conjunction with the needle lift sensor.
The crank sensor is easy to scope if there is a problem as it should give a nice clean output.The needle lift sensor provides quite a dirty output so its best seen on a diagnostic tool you can trust the readings from.
Testbook is very good in this respect and you normally see the readings as exactly the same at constant speed and the NL sensor will drop to zero on overrun.

Sorry if I didn't make it clear enough - what is the actual fault you are trying to fix ? Or is it just that you have been reading codes with a new toy ?

Ah, just reading codes. No obvious problem. But I would like her running tip top. Though I suspect that the Crank Speed Sensor is actually ok. Car goes nuts when you unplug it!

Then I think you need to contact your supplier and request a software upgrade.Testbook has been functioning properly on the 6cyl BMW nastiness since I bought it in 2003....

Crank speed senor gives engine RPM and TDC reference. The six pulses per revolution are reduced to three by the ECU to feed the tacho. Needle lift sensor measures start of injection. This information is compared to the signal from the CPS and used by the ECU to modulate the timing solenoid to change injection timing to suit engine load and speed conditions. I would leave well alone. But if you decide to remove CPS for cleaning for instance, by all means do so. But carefully unbolt it from it's bracket. DO NOT under any circumstances remove the bracket it is bolted to. Without at least scribe marking it's position. A special tool is required to reset the bracket to give the correct air gap. I do not know what the air gap should be, maybe someone else does. But get it wrong and you could destroy the CPS or knock a pipe off the flywheel. A serious ball ache if you do.

Oh dear - too much wine,you meant unplugging the crank sensor,not the Hawkeye.When you do this the engine ecu will pick up the revs as it defaults to the needle lift sensor.(If you did this on petrol it would just stop as there is no back up) As long as the engine behaves normally I would leave well alone,certainly as Wammers says removing the actual sensor is not a good idea unless you can reset it accurately.

Rachel, there are a couple of faults that often show when starting the engine and can be ignored. Not sure how they would show on Hawkeye. If it's running well, I'd leave it alone as it may just be a phantom fault caused by the voltage fluctuations when cranking.

Yes indeed, Nanocom often picks up an "invalid fault" as it calls it, at very low RPM, which must be on cranking. As long as everything is normal running wise safe to ignore that i would think.

Wise words as always........I will leave it, just the only fault that Hawkeye throws up......(and I wish I had not purchased Hawkeye, so damn limited!).

Yep, think you are right, going to leave it alone.....someone else has been there before me, as the Sensor wires have been soldered. I have check the joins and they are fine, though this could be throwing up the fault.
