crank pulley marks

whilst stripping of the viscous fan i noticed the bottom crank pulley has a few marks on one red a dab of white and a score on it at different intervals do0 these have to line up with anything as the crank bolt loosened the other day and not sure if the pulley slipped or not if i line any of the marks up the number one cam lobe wont line up to tdc number 1 firing

Crank pulley is located using a woodruff key so shouldn't slip...

Alignment of crank and cam is done using the Timing chain sprockets....

Read my recent thread on changing the front timing chain cover on my 4.0SE GEMS P38 this shows the timing gear and timing marks.

Not sure what your colours are for....do you have LPG? maybe the LPG installer was using a strobe to set LPG advance timing

cheers saint its not got lpg its a diesel

I thin you can feed LPG into a diesel. Makes it burn cleaner I believe.

Oh ...this is why it helps to state variant and model year

Crank pulley I don't think is woodruffed, just a sodding tight bolt and shouldered washer...

Still the crank and cam timing is done via a chain and sprocket arrangement under the front cover so a loose pulley won't affect the cam/crank timing.

cheers for the info i was a bit worried cos the engine started to race on tick over
