I've been browsing the area with my trusty marker and doubling up on Mm overlays today - theres a ruddy large network of ORPA's and BOAT's in the area - anyone driven them / know if its a contentious area ?

Just watch out for the Army especially the tanks. but apart from that noo nothing to worry about access wise.

I'm planning A mega weekend laning trip all the way round the perimeter of the plains sometime in Feb if you're interested.

Oh thats 'Soggy Bottom' or Whitsbury downs! :)

Just west of Downton and fairly local to me too.

That area does have a little bit of history but there is some otherwise fantastic lanes round there, some close wooded stuff and some fords as well.

What kind of history dude ? fanatical walkers, or lary locals ? Think i'll plan a day trip there very soon regardless though....

Bit of both. Just east of your grid ref is a large hole that is now got bollards all around it. It is the lowest point for mile around and so becomes a mud pit in the winter. Lots used to gather there for a 'play'. A local 4x4 club built a raised stone walk way around the edge for walkers and horses; that walkway has been extended and has now become the right of way.

No problem now, just not as 'interesting' as it once was.

It looks like a great network, although some of the ORPA seem to stop dead in the middle of no-where.

It is and yes some do. IIRC one of them is because it ends right near the target for the tank ranges!! Consequently the MOD Plod get a bit 'cross' about you using those 'right of way' ;)

IMHO most of the more interesting lanes are around the edge of the Plain.....but that is just my opinion :)

im gonna have to head down that way at some point - as soon as me clutch is sorted, or if thats not in time i will head down after im back next year!
