It will be coming down from the water pump.

they are designed to leak when the bearing goes, so it will need replacing.

Thanks for the quick replies chaps :D

The coolant is still circulating (bubbling in the header) - could it be the seal or def water pump replacement.

Cheers

 Sorry - Im used to working on my defender, so initially I thought stick a new water pump on - until I just read some threads!! Am I right in thinking this isnt just a simple job but you have to take timing apart etc.......this isnt a cheap fix and now I understand the unhappy face htr.......

Ok Im convinced, ill have a crack. Any particular tools I need to get; specific to job? Whats the time scale so I can let the Mrs know how long she will be car-less for (she wont drive the trattor!!)

Time frame - a day, you might as well replace the cam belt, tensioner & thermostat too seeing as you're in that area.

disconnect batt
drain coolant
remove s plugs - makes turning the engine over easier
jack up, support and remove driver's F wheel and inner splash guard
remove alt / AC belt & PaS belt
Jack under sump - gently take weight of engine on jack
remove hydrolastic engine mount connections [you don't have to take the actual mount out]
top engine tie bar loosen and swing up out of way.
underneath, remove lower engine tie bar thingy
remove top cam belt cover
turn motor on the crank pulley bolt so its 90º BTDC
place cam pulley locking device between cam pulleys
remove crank pulley
remove lower cam belt cover - nearly there!
loosen cam belt tensioner
remove [and disgard] belt [ unless it's very new]
remove water pump!

While your there: check cam shaft oil seals for leakage!

Did I forget anything?

re-asseembly
replace thermostat and its 'O' rings [if it has the std thermostat]
RTV seal w'pump 'O' ring into its groove - fit and torque up 9ft lbs?
Replace cam belt tensioner and its bolt
fit new cam belt - from cam belt drive up, over cam pulleys, down to tensioner and w'pump... set tension...

take care fitting the new belt, take care that cam pulley timing marks line up when turning motor over by hand 2 or 3 times. carefully refill with quality coolant and deionised water / rainwater... bleed cooling system

All good fun on a nice summer's day :)
