Couple of veg oil questions

Considering chucking 45 litres of veg oil into the tank for the run this weekend upto Brum n back, got about 20 litres of diesel in there atm so a steady 30/60 mix.

bit the bullet and chucked 20 litres in the Landy today, running no problems atm

have you got a spare fuel filter for when the veg oil drags the crap through? only cheap but worth having

Just omw to pick one up as i got a run to Birmingham at the weekend, may change it before but the run should pull plenty through so may do it when i get there for the journey back.

wouldnt worry too much, i did a couple of months before changing mine but i was only using 70% derv 30% svo

seems to run better now though

I got another 20 litres to put in tonight ( it's good doing the maintenance work for restaurants, free oil! ) so i should have a good 30/70 Diesel/Oil combination.

With regards to used oil, after filtering, is there likely to be much difference in the oil bearing in mind it's being subjected to high heat before hand ( cooking wise ) over standard veg oil?

have read somewhere on here about how to treat wvo properly including filtering and additives but cant find the post now.

Having searched through 8 pages of search results on this forum, I can only conclude that this forum could be a *little* more helpful.....

my search was for 'veg oil 300tdi' or there abouts.

there's just pages and pages of threads where people ask a question about running a landy on veg oil, then 100 responses telling them to "do a search" or "we've talked about it loads"....

how hard would it be for someone to paste in a link to the *original and/or best* thread about running landys on veg oil?

I'm at a bit of a loss now, other than to search endlessly through 10 years of old threads until I find the right one...

could anyone lay there hands on a link?

There are lots of threads but sometimes it is worth changing your search to just 'veg oil' and yes you will get more threads but you will also get more answers.

What definitive answer do you want? sometimes there isnt a definitive answer just experiences.

will veg oil screw my engine? - no definitive answer that I have seen but most seem to get away with between 50/50 to 80/20 (veg/derv) in warm weather but increase the derv % in colder weather as the veg oil is thicker and harder to get through the system. Personally I go around 50/50 but that is cos mine is an import and new injectors are a lot more expensive than a standard 300tdi so I would rather not risk blocking them up.

will veg run better? - maybe some claim increases in performance and mpg, some dont but it burns cleaner than running on derv alone

you will struggle to find a definate yes it will fook your engine or no it wont etc and a lot of it is down to the risks you are willing to take.

TBF I was just trying to help out the OP. I know 100% worked fine in my 200tdi, but tonight I'm about to rejoin the LRO club by buying a 300tdi!!!

anyway, I was interested in the old threads to make sure there's no changes in the 300tdi engine which could affect it's running on 100% svo, as compared to the 200tdi.

only differences I know of are the change from lucas to bosch fuel pumps but I dont know whether this was done from 19j to 200tdi or if some 200tdi's came with the lucas.

from what I have heard/read the bosch pump handles the veg oil better in most cars and not just landies where the lucas ends up with seal problems.

yeah I think they moved to bosch in the early nineties, so it was no doubt at the 19J to 200tdi transition. I know there was some types of 300tdi which had electronic injector pumps instead of mechanical.... I don't know anything about them... it's a '95 that I'm buying, so it's an early 300tdi, so probably no issues... I hope.

I've been running mine for a few days and no problems with it whatsoever (19J 2.5TD), just dropped 40 litres into the tank with apprx 20 litres of diesel left in there.

It is a little slower on start up ( mine's abit temperamental anyway ) but once after 10 mins it runs fine ( again this was an issue before with the engine a little, it's just a little more prominent now )

There should be no reason it will damage an engine, fuel filters & pumps may need more care, even injectors (?) but other than that, you get used to the smell
