Hi

Getting new car TOMORROW (2002 Disco ES Auto - CAN'T WAIT :D ) and it doesn't have a tow bar (how ridiculous  ) so I got a quote from a mobile fitting man ... £250.

Then I looked on e-bay and I can get an A1 towbar for about £80 delivered plus a few £££s for the electrics and ball thingy-ma-jig. But I don't know if that's a good make, so checked for Witter ones, again I can buy it for under £150 with all the bits.

Dare I attempt to fit it myself?? Have you done it, are you a mechanical genius, how hard is it??? Have searched this time (thank you Charles ;) and realise I'd need an able assistant!)

Probably worth mentioning here that while I can diagnose / identify / etc all sorts of things with a horse, I can just about manage to put fuel in my car (Oh god, how embarrassing!!!! )

Maybe I should see if a local garage can do it for a few £££s instead

Its only 4 bolts for the bar, and 4 screws to undo the off side rear light to locate the electric plug for the bar, need someone to give you a hand unless you have a tree stump to prop it up with as I did.

The correct trailer electrics are dead easy to fit.

Take off right rear light unit.

Get a string with a small weight on the end and drop down through where light was till it shows under the corner of the car.

Fit socket to plate and feed cable with plug on the end up high and over to the right, then attach plug to string and gently pull it up to light unit.

Fit plug to socket already there.

Replace rear light unit.

Attach a few cable ties here and there to keep cable up and safe.

Job Done.

Aaaaahhhhhhh you all make it sound soooooooo easy, with your tree stumps and your plumb lines!! However, I think a crash (not literally  ) course in "how to" do stuff to my car is called for here :D

1/ Find a man wiv a landy.
2/ Wear lowcut top
3/ flutter eyelashes
4/ act all weak and womanly
5/ stand back and watch man fit things asking loads of girly questions while he does so.
6/ make tea and thank man profusely whilst fluttering eyelashes
7/get mans mobile phone number, for the next time you want to fit something to your landy.

Yup. Piece of cake. I did mine in a couple of hours. It'll probably wreck your "departure angle" (and plough a furrow) though. Before my Disco, I fitted a towbar to a 3-series BMW which was a complete nightmare by comparison... You'll need a big torque wrench, as from memory the large niuts/bolts need over 120nm torque (supposedly!)...

Well if she's closer I might as well. You know me Slob never one to let an ugly face get in the way of a good time.

By God, you fellows certainly know how to make a lady feel valued and good about things!

I hope she's got a sense of humour - and maybe a baseball bat!
She'll need them both if she tangles with you guys!
