Could my freelander have been converted to 2WD?

Thanks all... I'm now thoroughly depressed.

As much as I love the FL to drive, I don't think I'd have the confidence to buy another :(

Sadly lots of folks get stung when buying a Freelander :(
You really do need to know exactly what you are looking at and how much things will cost to put rite. I've had 3 but luckily they have been pretty good although i'v had to do engine engine change my latest due to a faulty thermostat :( but I still love it :)
 
The good news is that if it isn't making orrible noises you can fix the transmission as and when you can afford it :). If Bell say you need a new IRD and VCU then start with the IRD, then save for a VCU :). Chuck a new set of tyres on and you'll never have the problem again now you know what to watch out for.

Ive got the same 2wd problem as well on a 52 plate 1.8.
The props and vcu all intact.No noises from ird, but it has had a new front prop?(only bought this car a few weeks ago)i cant do any jack up tests due to sloping drive and snow,so its off to the garage tomorrow. Paid £2200 73k 1.8 gs the car is mint so i wont mind spending a few err i mean a lot of quid on it

I dont think you can unless you connect it up? Obvioulsy you will know whether it is working in two wheel drive but it could be the rear drive part of it is knackered. Having read alot on this forum over the past month and got my hands very oily seeing how it all works together I would not go for a Freelander without a propshaft or advertised as 2WD - even if you are happy with 2WD they weren't bult this way and something has gone somewhere which may lead to further problems.

totally agree.. usually... but he's offering me the 50th edition cayman blue with body kit and its exactly the right one for me lol!!

what do i look out for, or listen out for with the prop shaft on if i take it out for a drive then?

There are others more qualified than me - a newbie - to tell you that . Re the VCU mine just felt wrong as though it was being held back when turning the steering wheel at full lock (put my foot on the clutch at full lock and it seemed to lock up). I had some vibrations too but this was probably VCU support bearings rather than the VCR. Re diff and IRD I would just be suspicious of any clonks or jolts or whinings. As I say others will know more than me .....

yeah i lnow what you mean, i think the vcu was going on my last one as i heard the clunks in full lock.

I'm just being cautious with this one, althoug the guy claims to be a mechanic and says its not the IRD that's gone, ya can't trust anyone that ain't family really. That's why i'm so eager to know what to look out for if it is the IRD

And newbie here too really, only had my last one for 12 months and really regret letting it go :(
 
It does Glynn, i just can't seem to find out how to tell if the IRD is gone before i buy. Is there anything physically that i could look out for? or is it just a noise i'm gonna be looking out for?
