Im buying my Dad's 1995 Disco off him. The 300TDi model. He called me up today to tell me that its loosing coolant at an alarming rate and he taking it to garage to get a diagnosis on it. The garage has told him that one of these plugs have gone. Apparently its the one towards the rear of the block by the bulkhead. They want to charge him circa £600 to remove the block and replace the plug.

Surely there has to be a cheaper way to do this?

I used to work for land rover fitting the dashboards into these things, is there any chance i could rip the dash out, cut a hole in the bulkhead and replace it from inside the car?

Sounds a bit far fetched i know but its all i can come up with to avoid paying that sort of price just to replace a a little plug.

Idea's/suggestions welcome!

Thanks

£600 to replace a £2.50 core plug - nice work

why not find some who'll lend you a hoist for a day and DIY

itll be the lab cost they are charging rather than the part.Do they know its the core plug not a head gasket?

Before you rush into anything there's two core plugs on the backend of a 300tdi that hold water and one that holds oil.
The two that hold water are located on the back of the head and lower down on the block.
The one on the head can be replaced by removing the head the one on the block could mean removing the engine to replace but I seem to recall some people on here doing it without engine removal. Unfortunately I don't know how.

This shows the plugs

I have seen a thread somewhere fairly recently which described replacing the core plug by putting a jack under the engine, disconnecting the manifold etc. Trouble is I can't find it as I visit a few forums. So keep searching!

Thread revival :D

FInally got verified on the forum. Is the coreplug thats on the side of the engine (as opposed to the top) accessable with some engine shifting?
