A quick Q gang. My AC failed some summers back and I've no intention of fixing it. Is there anything to be gained in terms of cooling by removing the condensor?
 
There will be a little, but probably not worth doing unless you are already in there.

If its going to cook itself, its going to do it regardless of an A/C rad being fitted or not

Just wondered and could not remember if it obscured the main rad in any way. If I ever need to remove the bumper cover may remove it - dead weight!! Thanks DM.
 
The AC condenser is mounted in front of the coolant rad so would affect cooling when you are traveling as it blocks the air flow. As for dead weight? The AC system weighs around 25 Kg's for the complete system. Would you notice if it was removed? I wouldn't think so.

Agree not really a weight issue but better fkow to the rad cant be a bad thing. Tx.

As you say the extra cooling is'nt a bad thing. Of course a working AC system can be used as a cooling booster at low speeds like you encounter off road as pressing the AC button runs the cooling fans on slow speed which really does pull extra air through the rad.

Didn't realise this is the case, not really up on AC as dint agree with me, so always have a window cracked open whatever the weather. My AC failure is bcos one of the pipe joints to the condensor fractured. I wonder if the fans still come in when I hit the AC button - must take a look?

If your AC is de-pressurized then the fans won't run when the button is pressed as the compresser is disabled by the low pressure switch which effectively shuts down the entire AC system, cooling fan request too. It might be possible to override the low pressure switch and disconnect the AC compressor clutch feed. This theoretically would kick in the fans when the AC button is pressed but i'v not tried it.

Yes the cooling fans will still work as they should under engine ECU control. It's only the additional AC cooling request that won't work. When the AC system is working correctly the fans are driven at slow speed regardless of engine temp to make sure that air is pulled though the condenser. Don't worry you fans should still work when the engine is hot ;)

That's a relief. Now I think about it, I cant recall the fans ever coming in - is there a simple test or does the engine have to get really hot for them to run. Also do both fans come in over a certain coolant temp? Thanks.
 
My fan does not run either. Have watched the temp climb to 99 degrees, then I shat it, and switched off, so it doesn't cook itself.

What temp. should the fan come on at?

I dont know the temp to trigger fans but got mine running - just left her ticking over for ages. They run totally silent, so you would never know they were on in normal use. Wax stat also took ages to open - guess ambient temp is low just now. Reason for my suspicion is that after 5 years I know where the temp gaugue sits and lately its been a degree higher ie was always just below half way, now sits bang on half way eerhm, hope i;m just a totally paronoid FL pilot!!!

Absolutely - I have no control over them at all.

The low speed is barely discernable - if I'm sitting in a traffic jam in summer for example, with the windows open, I can just hear the low speed fans cut in and cut out. That's with the coolant temp above 86C.

If I'm working it hard - towing, or climbing an Alpine pass in Summer, or when I pull into a motorway services after a 200 mile high-speed trip in a temperature of 35 to 40C then the real heavy-duty speed comes on. That may be at a higher temp perhaps 92C. They can run for a good few minutes after I've switched off, locked the car, and walked away.

When I think about it I can't remember when I last heard the high-speed fans running in the UK.

The temp the fans come in at and what speed depends on the engine fitted and the year the car was made. The diesels come in slightly earlier than the petrol models. Oddly the V6 comes in at the highest engine temp of 106°C for the slowest speed rising to the highest speed at 112°C!! The other models would work the same way but as a rule at a lower engine temp. My fans are far from silent at full speed but at slow speed I can't tell they are on.
As for the dash gauge? They are totally inaccurate!! My V6 gauge shows the same mid point temp when the engine is between 65 and 115°C I suspect that is deliberate to avoid customer concern. Basically if the engine is in the normal operating temperature range the ECU tells the gauge to display a mid point temp.

you would not have heard them running last year SV we did not have a summer
