Hi all,

My friend and I are new to the Land Rover experience and to DIY repaires! We know it's something we will have to get used to lol.

Anyway, we are trying to change the water pump but have come unstuck with a couple of the long bolts closest to the power steering pump pulley. We have worn the head on one of them and have no idea which way it is supposed to unscrew. The other turns both ways but does not unscrew. The one long bolt we did get out was really corroded.

Any help or ideas of how to get these off would be greatly appreciated. It would be great to complete this repair without having to resort to calling in a mechanic!

I changed mine a couple of days ago... They unscrew anti clockwise like normal.

If you have rounded them with a 10mm, try a 3/8 socket, hammer it on and just keep turning anti clockwise. If 3/8 is too big, go down to 9mm

Because of all the corrosion (this is a standard issue) they wont pull out easily, mine were a bitch. Make sure you are confident you have unscrewed it enough so that there is no possibility of there being any thread left engaged. Get a pair of mole grips on the bolt and its just a case of twist and pull. It will gradually come out.

Buy a new bolt kit for a fiver. Even though all of mine came out without rounding and fairly problem free, for a fiver its worth the peace of mind

1. It looks like you need to get yourself some six-sided sockets &

2. Get yourself a set of these, as they will get your rounded head bolts out:

here's a little ditty; righty tighty and lefty loosey work on 99% of all bolts and nuts. the other is left hand threads and will be marked with a letter L. And working on motors use 6 point sockets and wrenches and you will never strip a bolt head or nut. good luck

and know other will say i've never had problems with 12 point wrenches and sockets. then why are impact sockets made 6 point?
