Afternoon all, anyone give some advice on a problem with my TD4? I noticed at the weekend that the coolant appears to be coming out round, from where I could see in the dark, the water pump - also, when the engine is cold the water is flowing back into the expansion tank. I am hoping this isnt Head Gasket - any thoughts anyone???

if its the left hand side when looking at engine , it could be the thermostat housing, i had this a few months ago, there are 3 bolts holding it on, i tightned them up and leak cured ,

good luck,,, let us know what you find

Would this cause the water to flow back into the expansion tank when the engine is cold though?

If I look under the engine at the driver side - the water seems to be coming out above the belts, around the level where the engine sump fastens on - but I could be wrong as I was looking under using a torch in the dark!

not sure about the flow back into the expansion tank ,(ill check my own for you later) but it looks like you gonna have to clean and dry around where you think it is comming from and have a close look,

how much water are you loosing ?

lets not think about HGF, its a BMW;)

Have booked it into Les Potts for them to have a look at thursday morning - have a year old baby so need to motor on the road - the main thing that is bothering me is the overflow into the expansion tank from cold - making me wonder if there is pressure there that shouldnt be!

I think its because the by-pass hose dos'nt flow 100% through and excess gos up top and into tank and round and round etc

Bunging it into Les Potts tomorrow morning, hopefully it is something cheap - the missus isnt happy that we have spent £2k on it in the last year (granted that includes servicing and a full set of tires). I think I should keep a track on how much she spends on shoes and use that as a bargaining tool ;-)

Thought I would post a follow up following my visit to the garage - the leak is coming from a pipe coming from the head - and typically they didnt have the pipe in stock - getting it fitted later in the week so hopefully that will be the end of it! :)

Thanks for your help everyone - you have been great as usual
