TD5mm

New Member
Hi everyone, I am new to the forum so please bare with me if this has been asked before.

I have a 2000 TD5 mm auto. When i turn the aircon/climate control on i can smell what i believe to be antifreeze. The carpets are not wet but when the car is stood for an hour, small puddles of what i also think is coolant appear under the car i have not had chance to have a good look underneath yet but will do soon.

There is no water in the oil and no oil in the water. There was no water in the header tank when i checked but was still water in the system as when the car was running the water was going back to the header tank.

I have topped the water up now and will now monitor.

The car gets to the middle on the temp gauge and does not go higher. I was stuck in a traffic for an hour bumper to bumper yesterday and the gauge never moved.

Any ideas would be very much appreciated.

Will have a good look under the car tomorrow.

Thanks

May or may not be connected but A/c systems do chuck out lots of water, in cars it is usually dumped underneath on the road.

My one smells a bit but only when i turn it off??

Hi thanks for the replys but this is not the air con. I know after usig air con you get a puddle under the car. And the air con water discharge doesnt smell like antifreeze. The Liquid under the car does smell like antifreeze so i am sure it is Engine coolant. Just dont know where its coming from. you cant really see much on these engines lol.

Thanks

My 2001 TD5 GS had a similar problem. I tracked the leak to the flange joint on the back of the water pump. A seal kit is available to fix it - but its quite a fiddly job. Took me 5 hours to do it - but no more leak.
Good luck....

Had a look underneath today and to be honest could not see a great deal as to where its coming from. The coolant hasnt gone down any. Problem is there is a little bit of an oil leak which i think is seeping down from the rocker type cover.

Will continue to monitor. I am hoping that it may well actually be the aircon discharge that is running onto the oil leak causing a coolant type residue left on the drive as the coolant hasnt gone down any!

Will check the water pump flange anyway - thanks for the advice

The 'oil leak' may well be oil from the rocker cover, but it might also be diesel leaking from the fuel pressure regulator on the drivers' side of the engine. Another common one...

Ok, im convinced its not the air con discharge as i have now been driving it for 2 days without the air con on at all so have had no discharge. The leak is still dripping. Cant see where the hell its coming from. Haven't lost any water from the header tank so fingers crossed on that one.

Will try to have another look to see if i can see the fuel pressure reg tomorrow.
Could it be gear box oil?

Thanks again

Been and had another look this morning and there is more puddles underneath the car and now the water level has definately dropped overnight a good 15mm. Cant see a thing as to where its coming from. Its right at the back of the engine and you just cant see it!

Ok so i got the rave cd (thanks for heads up) and had a good look at coolant system but i am now convinced it is not coolant leaking as the coolant level appears to have stayed the same for a few days now. Checked all the coolant pipes anyway and all seems ok. Cleaned all the drips etc from under the car to see if ican see where the leak coming from. Left it a day and hey presto new drips. Still cant tell where its coming from though. Its a light colour oil by te loks of it Dripping from bottom of gerbox case. Its not red so can rule out ATF - is that right or am i talking rubbish???

The othr thing i havenoticed recently is that first thing in the morning when i put the car into drive/reverse i seem to have to press further down on the pedal before the car moves. when its warm the car starts to move slowly when you put it in drive/reverse. Not had an auto before so not sure if this is normal or not???

Maybe the leak and this are related???

Thanks

Took it down to our local Landrover specialist today and the guy got it on the ramp and showed me straight to the source. Mr Pye you were spot on with the fuel pressure regulator leaking. Thankyou! I never even spotted it before, to be honest didnt have a clue where it was lol. He quoted me £104 plus vat plus fitting. Is this about the right price or does anyone know where i can get my hands on a cheaper one?

Many thanks for everyones input on this matter.
