Up **** creek.
Hi, I've got about 6/7K to spend on a new vehicle and quite like the idea of a LPGed V8 L322, I know nothing about the beast however, what should I be worried about? are they ridiculously expensive to maintain/run/repair etc? I had an audi allroad before and it was the biggest pain in the arse when something went wrong, and usually very expensive.

For the same money I can get a tidy D2 which will be simpler and cheaper to run.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

+1 or a p38 for 3-4 k and rest for works. L322 - If you are worried about maintenance cost and stretched to buy. You'd be very lucky to get a good example at that price

V8 l322 for a decent example I'd save a little more, check for regular gearbox servicing or box reconditioned if mileage higher, other things to watch, radiators tend to leak, timing chain guides go anywhere over 160k, timing chain tensioner needs replacing if mileage high and it's not been done.
On top of that air suspension issues, electrical faults etc etc, with an l322 expect big bills when things go wrong if you can't fix things yourself

If you buy an L322 for £6/7k you will either be buying someone problems of high miles, neither of which will make it cheap to run. Post 2006 facelift models are more reliable than the early ones, but you will not find one for your budget. If you are handy with a set of spanners and buy a diagnostic tool, they are not too expensive to maintain. If you are relying on a garage to do the work, it will be expensive.
Would suggest a D2 or P38 if you want to keep running costs down

I paid £6k for an 04 2 years ago and I could probably dig out the same in receipts as I bought on impulse
Have a search on this site, there has been at least two what to look for threads in the last couple of months

Alternatively buy four 2.7v6 Santa fe / sportage or two 3.0 legacies of the same vintage, budget feck all on maintenance and enjoy p1ssing all over range rovers:)

Hmmm.
I would maybe suggest a super nice p38 westminster..
IF you have to go l322 and LPG you need to get the BMW engine and not the later Jag unit.
best of luck...

Really, I thought the Jag engine was a better all round unit?

As much as I like P38's, and i have had my fair share of them, the L322 is a different beast altogether. Interesting to hear all the responses saying get a P38, when it seems not that long ago everyone was saying don't get a P38 buy a disco or classic.

L322's are getting cheaper and easier to fix and maintain the same way P38's did.

Just my opinion.

Oh and i just picked up an L322 for a lot less than your budget. Needs a couple of jobs but well within the leftover from your budget.
