We have had an extremely reliable Toyota Surf 3.0L auto for the past 5 1/2 years but are looking for a change like moving across to a RR.
We are looking at buying a diesel auto RR around 10 years old, but as there are a number of different engines, we would like to know which is the most reliable engine / gearbox combination and sort of mpg that can be expected? Also what sort of spec should we be looking at if we want air con and cruise control. Thanks.

:pop2:

Reliable? I'd suggest a discovery rather than a range rover p38, range rover a disaster area in reliability and L322 range rover far from perfect.

Range Rover P38 reliable where do I start 4.6 engine fitted a new one,alarm/immobiliser played up twice.Suspension decided it was funny to every so often throw a glitch up I could go on.Great motor when running ok but more trouble than a mad man in an armoury.Had 2 classics before that and not a problem now have a Disco TD5 and ok there are a couple of quirks to look for but are repairable by a competant person. For Disco TD5 info google discovery2 a good site.

same here....

well, I dont have a surf, but im looking to buy a RR, the L322 though, 2003 or 2004 plate as i hear less problems on this model than the P38

Read loads, its like any car, some people dont have any problems, some have loads!

there's 2 main things I've read about the RR L322, one is the front diff recall that should have been done.

the other is the steering column that goes...and that cost £450 to repair

the onboard computer can also lose pixels

fanatic, whats the problems with the L322 you talk about?

I had a Surf, most unreliable car I have ever owned. cost me 2.5k in 6months of ownership,
amongst thing the head blew, block crackedm turbo went, rad died and so on.

Hated it with a passion, but like all cars there are good ones and bad ones.
