Series III diesel owner here,

My Land Rover won't start; she turns over fine, and the oil pressure and cold start lamps both come on as they should, but she won't fire.
When I turned her over, there was some smoke coming from the wire from glow plug number four. Can anybody let me know how this should all be connected properly?

Thanks, Jamie

What he said^^^^^
Looks like you've connected the live black and yellow wire direct to earth? It will certainly smoke if you've done that.

If I were you I'd download the workshop manual and get some bedtime reading in.....
Google it its there for free if you look.

Get a photo of all the plugs then we can see how it should go...as said above it could be 2 different ways.

there's a couple of photos

Yes thats right I don't see why you need that wire then and as said it certainly shouldn't go to earth.
Does it still turn over ok and puff out a bit of smoke?

That earth cable to number one injector looks dodgey and shouldn't go there. Fuel return pipe from number 4 injector - is that melted?
I scribbled down how the wiring went when I had a 2.25 diesel many yrs ago, think I jotted it down in the Haynes manual, I can go have a look for you when I get home much later if you like?

Ok I've worked out the geography of your pictures now, me being slow......It looks wired up ok but maybe you have shorted it out somewhere near the resistor looks like somethings got pretty hot so check the wiring for crispy cables. In the meantime do a google search for some photos of what it should look like.

EDIT if it did short you need to find out where otherwise fixing the wiring won't be enough.
