Hi,

Im hoping to fit some new brake discs to my 1989 land rover 90, however im getting a bit confused with how to adjust the wheel bearings when i ut it all back together and i dont really want to start without getting as much nfo as i can on it.
Basically im unsure how much to tighten the bearings and then how much to release them by as i understand you tighten them up and then release them a bit?
So far i have been told/ have read this;

1. Tighten to 61 Nm and then release and retighten to 4Nm (RAVE CD, unsure which vehicle)

2. Tighten to 50 Nm and then release and retighten to 10Nm (RAVE CD, defender from 1996 :doh: )

3. Do it by feel - I have never done this before so im unsure if id know when to stop

4. Tighten it all the way up? and then release a 1/4 of a turn ( Busters thread)

If i go the torque wrench route how accurate are torque wrenches? The one i have appears to be pretty old.

Any help would be much appreciated,

Cheers,

I have always done it by hand. tighten it right up, then back off (upto) a 1/4 turn. basically your looking for it to be tight whilst still allowing it to rotate smoothly and also take out any slack. put a hand at 12 and 6 and wiggle, 9 and 3 and wiggle. I shouldn't move at all really. but it is difficult to meet all criteria. remember to check it after a while as when they bed in, can cause some slack and will need nipping up.

Do it by feel and see how you go.
