Compromise...

Im hopefully going to be looking for a defender once i have the funds together. I will be looking for something *fairly basic to start with and hopefully *build a vehicle which'll suit me. I am after some advice about choosing between a 90 or a 110... I'm thinking a 90 as they seem to be a better vehicle off road..? Also there seems to be more 90's in my price range... *
But im also thinking of a 110 for the bigger load area...?

I will be using the truck for carrying tools + materials for work (carpenter/builder), carrying the dogs or a bike around, some green laning, p+p days too and hopefully a few long trips around the uk + abroad... So allsorts really. So where do i make a compromise.. Is a 110 much bigger than a 90?
Is a 110 much worse off road...?

(also is this in the right forum)

110 will manage perfectly well off road. and you'll hate the 90 in a couple of weeks if you want to carry loads of gear in the back. 110 will give you nearly 3ft of extra room in the back

i use a 90 (also a builder) but have a ifor williams tipper trailer
have a roof rack i can put on if needed (firm has a sprinter van but only like driving me 90 :D)
can make do, i could probably do with a 110 but i am a 90 man through and through ;)

Not the answer i was looking for dudes. :frown: . I doubt i'll be able to afford to insure two vehicles due to my age, otherwise i'd have a 90 and keep my astra... I have been looking around ebay, auto-trader etc, there seems to be alot more 90's in my price range (3-4k'ish), do 110's often come up at this sort of price? or will i have to be lucky?

I would of thought a 110 hard top should suit you given your intended uses, and they don't reach quite the same prices as truck cabs or station wagons.

a 90 is a waste of time if you want to put anything in the back. I can't think of one single reason that a 90 is better than a 110 except it'll fit in a slightly smaller parking space.

well I love the 90 and thats it. Anyhows, I have a 90 and if you even want to put a mans push bike in the back, its a take the wheel of job! rather annoying in that respect. Fits some tools on the arches, and a dog with other bits and bobs at a push. lovely tho :) but not if you want to carry stuff! there is only about 4ft of lengh in back.

i had a 90 before and it is annoying having a massive 4x4 but not being able to get anything in the back lol. I have a 110 van now. The difference is not that great off road unless u are at competition level in which case u should have a separate motor for work.

If I were a builder I'd get a hi cap pick up. http://www.cameltrophydiscovery.co.uk/lang110hicapstuck.JPG or something similar. Get an ex utility they are cheaper and usually well looked after.

hard tops what yer want in a 110
decnet off road and yer get lot more tuff in it used ter run 110 hard top fer work and 90 fer fun if i could only have one id have a 110

if i wasnt now a manager and only need ter take a laptop about sites so got a 90

i dont think a pick up would be any good for me, i carry too many expensive electrical tools, the need to be kept relativley safe and dry... Also i'm 6'5" so i doubt there'd be enough room in tge cab. I think you guys have knocked the 90 out of the picture fo me for the tim bein.

110 hardtops tend to fetch lower prices than 90's generally. You could try brightwells auctions seen some corkers go for peanuts on there.

yeah i was going to say when i was after a landy 110s were fetching lower prices than 90s redhand are you from herefordshire just it says where the apples grow for location. and going on about brightwells in leominster sorry to be nosy like

NO am living in ZummerZet. but from Hull E Yorks Originally. I mentioned Brightwells because they are probably the biggest auctioneers for 4x4's if you visit their site they usually have a list of vehicles sold at the previous auction and the prices they fetched.

I've trialled both 90's and 110's, the only real difference is the turning circle on the 110 is substantially greater (just learn to handbrake turn), on some ground the extra length of the 110 is a bonus as the rears are still pushing you on level ground as the fronts go over a crest, or on some ground the middle of the chassis will bottom out leaving you rocking. You choose your vehicle and takes your choice, but on balance I think the 90 just shades it off road.

I used a 110 as a work truck and could fit in the back full size doors, the smaller sheets of plasterboard (6 x 3ft) and full lenghts of copper or waste.

In my 90 I struggle to get my fishing rods in the back!!
