I bought a brand new engine for my 03 discovery at Christmas. About 5 weeks ago it broke down as water poured from under the bonnet, the hoses were all totally rigid. RAC towed it into my local 4x4 garage (who I have complete faith in having known them for many years). After much testing and replacing to eliminate problems such as radiator, water pump etc, a brand new engine was delivered. It was decided that it couldnt be anything else other than the engine which has now been sent off for testing. Today the new engine was up and running, and the compression issue has risen its head again sending the temperature sky high. So, does anyone know of any issues that havent yet been considered yet? Everyone involved has been great so far but I think there's a lot of head scratching going on.

Thermostat is the most likely fault followed by water pump and expansion cap. The thermostat has 2 valves on it unlike a normal one. The first valve is temp operated as per a standard thermostat. The second is opened by the suction power of the waterpump at 1500 rpm+. If the water pump is weak it cannot suck the valve open. If the expansion cap fails, again it loses suction. If the valve jams the coolant will overpressurise.

thanks for your suggestion ratty. All those have been eliminated. Also as the vehicle is lpg converted I have read a suggestion about the vaporiser being faulty so we went over to talk about this with the landyman. He had already considered this and has bypassed the vaporiser thereby eliminating that problem too.
