Hi all, i was just wondering how easy it would be for a novice like me to change all the oils on my 200tdi 90 1991. I have some knowlege of changing oil on my previous cars.

Today i was quoted £170 to change/check and top up if needed at my local landy garage, the guy said it would be £100 for the oil and £70 labour.

Is it worth the hassle doing it myself or should i cut my losses and pay someone to do it who has a ramp and stuff. My landy has a 1" lift kit fitted. Will it be a struggle doing it myself?

Thanks

P.S i just want peace of mind as i only purchased it 4 days ago.

Do it yersel', it's a piece o' ****!;)
What part don't ye know about?

Its more a case of locating the different plugs to drain the oil and knowing which oil im changing, i.e knowing where the gear box is etc.... oh and knowing what oil to buy? How much do you think the oil would cost, should i go to hafords or a local car parts shop?

Cant help with prices but I would say that it would be cheaper to buy 25lr drum of engine oil as the engine takes quite a lot and you will get 2 oil changes from that.
Local motor factors for a price and look on internet, might get it all and delivered pretty cheap, well cheaper than 100 quid anyway.

Ye'll probably know how to do an engine oil and filter change if ye've done cars before.

Then there's the diffs. Just a case of undoin' the drain plug on the bottom of the diff pan and fillin' up through the plug on the front of it.

Shop around for ye're oils as some places are cheaper than other. For my engine oil ah've just found a place that sells 25ltrs fur £40. Ah think they might do the likes of other oils but not sure yet (never asked!).

Changing the oil and filter is really easy...

Do get a haynes manual or similar for the detail of all the drain/filling points, and make sure you have the right quantities and grades of oil (Something like 27 litres of oil of various grades on a classic rangie auto), and any drain plug washers you need.

Remember that some manual gearboxes use ATF (Automatic Trans Fluid).

Get under there and do it.....

Remember the swivels too - I like the grease replacement to the oil myself - less leaks out. And the axles.

On the last photo is that on the side of the gear box or the top? How am i going to get the oil in without it goin everywhere? Do i just top up till it comes over the entry hole? I have the landy manual which you get with the vehicle, this explains a bit. What is a tranfer box? Whats its purpose?

Ta for the pics and explaination.

Sorry to butt in on the thread but thinking of doing this myself soon and was wondering if anyone could list what oils (grades etc) are needed for a 300tdi 1997 Manual Defender. I want to order some through our contact at FUCH's or Total through work to save a few quid.

Ta.

Engine oil- 6.85 ltrs.... multigrade 5W/30 to 25W/50 (including oil filter)
Gearbox- 2.67 ltrs .... ATF
Transfer box LT230R- 2.80 ltrs...EP 80 / 90
LT230T- 2.30 ltrs (upto suffix D)... EP 80 /90
- 2.80 ltrs (from suffix E)
Front axle- 1.70 ltrs.... EP 80 /90
Rear axle (salisbury)- 2.30 ltrs.... EP 80 /90
Swivel housing (each)- 0.35 ltrs.... EP 80/90(or one shot swivel grease)

Above is for the 200tdi. Only difference is the engine oil cap. fur the 300tdi... 5.80 ltrs + 0.85 ltrs fur oil filter.

It's up the side of the gearbox. If ye look in me guides under 'a handy wee tip', ye'll see how ah fill mine. Aye fill it up until it starts to dribble out.

What is suffix e d etc....

These are the letters that go infront of the number on yer box. Yours will probably be D if it's the original box.

Also mine has a diso rear axle?

Doesn't matter, fill it up until it dribbles out.

May I suggest you avoid any fancy oils for the engine.... mineral oils are best suited to older diesel engines, cheaper the better. I use Asdas own in my 1994 300tdi 15W/40 for older diesel engines is £10 for 5ltrs (you need 2...one for topping up and next service). You dont need to flush or clean the engine, just change the oil/filter and sump plug washer every 6k or so.
Youtube will show you how to change engine oil and filter. Top up the filter with fresh oil before you screw it back on.
Its nice to save £120 on a service... you can buy goodies with the savings, axle stands, grease gun, oil filter wrench plus lots of beers!

This is very true, the savings that is. My landy is a 200tdi and has done 213000 miles. So you reckon just some cheap mineral oil 15w/40. Thats good to hear, thats more money in my pocket. Thanks.

I am going by the vast experience on here and my own limited. You dont want to be removing 200k + worth of carbon from the engine as its nice and tight and running okay. Mine has 155k runs sweet on Asdas own or Tesco's if its on offer:)

Ive replaced my engine sump plug with a drain plug

4x4 Store

A bit pricey, but when used with the drain hose they are a doddle to use. Screw the hose onto the plug and the oil drains out. No more problems with the sump plug falling into the bucket of used oil.

Whare abouts is the oil filter on a 200tdi, i've managed to locate the dipstick, is it on the same side or is it on the left as your looking at the front of the landy from the outside?
