do you happen to know if the 300 tdi is common rail ?
I can't seem to find anything saying whether it is or isn't.

no its not....its a direct injection....follow the fuel lines back from the infectors and u will get to the fuel injector pump, therefore not a common rail.
common rail refers to a single gallery filled with fuel that all the injectors are fed from.
a TD5 is in essence, a sort of common rail, but differnt in that it has an injector cam shaft......

yip u right...more like 20,000 plus psi...wonder what it would do if u put yer finger there??

friend of mine ran a industrial high pressure power washer over the end of his red wing rigger boots and it cut and peeled the leather and rubber toe cap end off and cause that was attached to the sole the front of that started to peel of from the sole and the rubber toe bit was cut off the sole when it tried to flip back in place VERY NASTY, an injector would very easily cut your finger clean off and force derv or petrol into your blood very nasty again. a water jet cutting steel from thin up to 4inch thick typically runs 22000 psi - 55000 psi.:)

The Transit engine still needs to be built for reliability. Big fleet managers will very quickly turn to an alternative manufacturer if maintenance/servicing costs are high. I accept that the leccy bits make dealers servicing a necessity - hence raising money for manufacturer/brand. Emissions regs killed the old stuff, so it had to go.

However, I think this was an inspired and pragmatic decision by LR - fitting a reliable, commercial engine in the Defender. I love my Td5 engine, but I will be getting the new Tdci cos I think it will be cheaper (comparatively) over it's lifetime than the Td5.
