Hi all out there. Well the MOT has just expired on my Land Rover 90 Td5 and she has been worked hard for many many years and has reached the time in her life where I feel she deserves a re build instead of a patch up that'll do for now type of fix 😂
So I thought id post it up on here whilst I do it. I have limited Mechy knowledge but with the help of you people out there I hope at the end of it I will have something to be proud of. I work quiet long hours and this could slow things up a little so by no way or means is this likely to be a quick rebuild. I have given myself a target of driving it to the Peterborough Land Rover show in September. 😓😓
Hope fully I will start the strip down later this week. The biggest job on a Landy I have done in the past is swap a bulkhead on a 90td but that took a while but I did it so who knows how this will go but nothing ventured and all that.

What are your plans for it? New chassis or body panels off, repaired, painted and put back together?

Well it all depends what I find as I go really. 3 main things which defo need doing are clutch as she is running quiet a lot of power and has eaten the current one, next is a defo rear X-member and lastly the bulkhead needs attention. It Is not rotten in the usual places surprisingly. Basically I'm planning on stripping it to a rolling chassis and then Decide from there.
I will take the engine and box out and probably fit a disco transfer box as I do quiet a few miles. Also I will be changing a few things so I will have parts to sell which should help out with the build.

Just a quick question I've been mulling over is, is there anything I should do to the engine whilst it's out and on the bench. I have ported and polished old ford engine heads in the past with good results as well as re grinding the valves back in, but are these engines going to benifit from anything like that or am I best just giving it a clean and a paint and putting it back in.

So had about 4 hours spare yesterday the sun was shining so I got cracking on the strip down. Believe it or not the disc cutter did not depart its box. I couldn't believe that. I hope to grab a few more hours today.

If you are changing the rear x member it may be easier if you don't remove the tub as that will help you align the new one, either that or you will need to take careful measurements before cutting the old one off. Pressbrake on here does excellent ones (got one on my 90), they cost more than the cheapy Britpart type replacements but will last the life of the remainder of your chassis rather than a few years. That said I had mine replaced in a day because I was using the vehicle, if I was doing a complete rebuild at the time I may have gone for a new galv chassis to get rid of any future concerns with chassis issues. I would recommend Pressbrake's x member over anything else but get a quote for one from him then weigh it up against the cost of a new chassis and your future plans for the vehicle and the state of the rest of the chassis.

Thanks for the advice. I've replaced a series 3 R/xross member before with just my old arc welder a few years ago and it worked quiet well. I will make my mind up what to do and how far to go once I can see the rest of the chassis. Just about to go back out and it's looking like rain😩😩 fingers crossed as busy week at work next week so work on the Landy will be minimum.

Looking good so far.

One thing I've seen people do on here when replacing chassis components is weld themselves a temporary jig so the new bits can go in the right place. No matter how carefully you try to measure there's always the odd bolt hole that's a few mm out!

Fast work so far, it'll soon be in a big pile of bits :D
Look forward to the rest of this build, not many td5 ones about.

Oh and don't know if you've removed them lights to take the wing off or not, but if so no need, just unplug the loom at the bulkhead :)

Great idea. Thanks. That's what I like about this forum always 100 heads R better than 1 👍

Hi Arron. Firstly you've pushed me on to do mine after reading you threads so cheers mate. The lights I took out are because I'm planning and svx front and respray.
Progress a bit slow today but used wisely as I bought an engine stand off ebay last night so I've been and collected that just having a Mc d's breakfast then heading back to crack on rain or shine. 👍😋

Had a good 5 hours on it today, sadly it only looks like I spent an hour on it. Yesterday I seemed to fly through it, today I did loads but she don't look a lot different. Needless to say the angle grinder had a big input today. So started my removing the wings.

I removed all the checker plate and snorkel etc. Removed about 2 ton of mud from up the arch which is probably why the outriggers are looking worse for wear.
Next I removed the tunnel and floor matting which unbelievably was still wet after 4 weeks locked in a barn. No wonder these floor pan rust through.
