To make my recently purchased late N plate 28/05/06 4.6HSE look less dejected and unloved it's in need of either a respray to the bonnet and lower tailgate or preferably renewal with an original matching coloured replacement.

The first problem I have is determining what the actual colour is as the original vin plate on the headlight panel has been removed to mount an emergency EAS inflation system bracket where the new fill valves sit. Handy for a get it home EAS emergency but no use for me trying to sort the colour code.

Incidentally, the car is all 100% genuine so the missing plate is down to the unfortunate forgetfulness of the original owner, a good friend of mine who is suffering degenerative Alzheimer's Disease and never had plans to sell the car - I've known him / the car for years!!

If there isn't another place located on the car and in the absence of any original documentation with the car or original sales literature, is there a database where the VIN number can be inputted either online or through LR to bring the code up or is it purely reliant on a decent paint shop using their kit / software to analyze the current colour? My long gone local paint pro place is a casualty of the recession and I cannot think of anywhere else I could try.

Ideally I'd far prefer to unbolt the current one and bolt on an identical aged good bonnet from either a breaker or ebay seller - there's plenty of choice and price ranges out here online. To do this I still need to get the code or name though. Short of parking mine next to a similarly coloured car with a code available all I can try is posting a few pictures here and ask your thoughts!! That of course is frought with issues as a backlit RGB screen (probably LCD) will look different on everyone's computer and even under differeing lighting conditions the car can appear lighter / darker without even getting bogged down on the vagaries of cameras and digital software...

this it is what it is, just a stab at trying to determine just exactly what I've got to try and make as informed a decision as I can to maybe travel to see a seller with a bonnet, with maybe if I'm lucky, a decent lower tailgate too!

FWIW, I believe it's either Oslo Blue 644 or Biarritz Blue 965 as Monte carlo Blue 608 is too vivid and light and Oxford Blue is too dark.

I know it goes against the grain, but have you tried calling your nearest LR stealership? They should be able to sort you out.

BTW - where in South Wales are you located? Don't seem to be too many of us P38 owners in these parts (or not many who contribute on this fine site, anyway!).

Take your car to a automotive paint factor (who supply bodyshops, most towns of any size will have at least one). These fellas will have paint swatches for matching purposes, hold them against a concealed area to avoid sun fade like on the door shuts for example and you should be able to find the colour code and name.

Hi LTLF, that's actually not a bad call as Stratstone LR have offered me some decent service/advice recently and I didn't need to show them photo's of a P38 to prove these exist! It just goes against all instincts knowing previous experiences with Prats Counter staff over the years...

I'm in Swansea too, out near Parkmill on the Gower. The car's off the road at the moment way out at the end of Gower so we probably wouldn't cross one another's paths mind! It's being fettled to get it MOT'able as I'm trying to resolve how to get the airbag SRS warning switched off as it's an instant failure. Done the bulbs, rotary controls fixes but it seems, I'm going to have to get mine into the Stratstone to sort this out - difficult on SORN with no MOT...

I see quite a few P38's around locally actually, some on an almost daily basis. A particular one that caught the eye is modified with the facelift Sport Supercharged three bar drilled grille which actually looked surprisingly good going the other way! Not yours is it?

Hi Fergie46, that seems the most viable way forwards if the local LR agent is hopeless. I just cannot think of anywhere left in business locally though a bit of googling/yellow pages may yield results when I'm sorted with the other issues mentioned!

Nah, that's not mine. Mine is a very tired looking 2001 4.6 Vogue in Monte Carlo blue, with a cracked rear bumper and Comet wheels that are crying out for a refurb!

I had the same SRS issue as yourself last year. Can highly recommend a local garage if you're interested? PM me for more info.

Hi LTLF

Surely a Monte Carlo Blue P38 will look fab in this sunshine, with or without 'distressed' alloys!?

That recommended local place you know could be very very useful info to have as anyone that's recommended is already onto a good standing and someone who can be depended on!
I'll try pm'ing now!!
