What the hell possessed you to move to a place like that, weather not bad enough for you in the UK? lol
Well sometimes I do find myself asking that! I love the western Arctic though, and Yellowknife is a fantastic place. Just the right size (20,000ish) and not as remote now that we have year round road access. There are great people here, so many opportunities, the wages are higher and we pay less taxes than 'down south'. I can handle the cold (even if my 90 can't), but winter does go on. And on. And on. I've been fortunate enough to see a fair amount of the arctic on someone else's dime, even going to Eureka, Nunavut twice. That's at 80 deg N, the second most northerly permanently populated place on the planet. I spent 10 years living in southern Canada (British Columbia), and I've lived in Yellowknife for 23 years now. I would be happy to retire here. Most days :)

To actually answer your question: adventure.

Makes sense. That's the one thing I envy about Canada and the USA. Proper Wilderness, and you can actually go out and not see anyone for days or weeks. There's literally nowhere in the UK, outside some of the Scottish islands, that you can experience that to a small degree.

For sure. Our nearest big city is Edmonton, Alberta. It's an 18 drive from here. For the first 9 of that there's pretty much nothing. You'd drive past the turning to Fort Providence (pop 618) three hours from here, then in a further two you'd pass through what's left of Enterprise. That community was 90% destroyed by a wildfire in '23, but even before that had a population of only 75. Three hours from Enterprise is High Level, AB and that is just under 4000 peeps. That's the half way point.

What's amazing is that even 90 mins from a city like Vancouver you can be in genuine wilderness. It's a big-arse country and 90% of the population live within 200 miles of the US border. The rest of it is wiiiiiiiide open.
